Music reviews of Rainbow

Music Review: A Mariah of many colors
Rating: 4 Stars

It's not surprising that Mariah wasn't "all there" while recording this album. Not saying she was nuts (that came later), but even she admits that she created Rainbow so she could leave her ex hubby Tommy Mottola's label Sony. Needless to say, they weren't on good terms so I can't blame Mimi for jumping ship.

Since Rainbow was pretty much a rush release, it isn't as thoughtful, introspective, or mature as Butterfly, but it has it's moments. Minus the embarrissingly corny front and back covers. A lollipop with a rainbow printed on your ass? Really, Mariah?

The cutesy, rubbery roller rink pop of Heartbreaker opens the album. Although musically it sounds too young for Mariah (think Kidzbop), the lyrics are pretty mature with words like euphoric, relinquish, and incessantly thrown in. You know Mimi loves her thesaurus. Jay-Z drops a kooky rap so it's all good.

The dramatic ballad Can't Take That Away is an obvious swipe at Mariah's critics, but she manages to make the song relatable to anybody who's had to deal with being put down by others. Using her faith in herself and God, Mariah rises above those her mean her harm and sings the hell out of it. The lyrics aren't sappy which is a surprise when you find out Diane Warren (the undisputed queen of schmaltz) co-wrote it.

Bliss is a bubbly 70s throwback and homage to the original whistle note queen Minnie Ripperton. Mariah not only hits her whistle, she's able to phonate words with it too. The contrast between her seductively husky vocals in the verses and the light whistles in the chorus is phenomenal. Depending on your mood it might drive you nuts, but I like it. The Usher duet How Much is ok. It's not bad, but it's not all that good either. Jermaine Dupri's constant blabbing doesn't help.

The smoky Spanish guitar of After Tonight is definitely a sequel to Butterfly's My All. Mariah's finally got her prayer answered to be with the man she lusts after, but she wonders if "After tonight/Will you remember/How sweet and tenderly/You reached for me and pulled me closer?/After you go/Will you return to love me/After tonight begins to fade?" X-Girlfriend is good, but very dated. Remember when alot of R&B songs in the late 90s featured a random violin? This one does too. The lyrics are funny with Mariah sassily putting her man's ex on blast for trying to get him back. Neck rolling and all.

The Heartbreaker remix is so much funkier than the original. Sampling a bouncy Snoop song and assisted by the rhymes of Da Brat and Missy Elliot, Mariah's vocals are less cutesy and more sultry. Winner! After a short interlude, the Phil Collin's cover Against All Odds is next. Mariah's voice is lovely, but I can't warm up to this song. Something about it feels off and slightly cheesy to me. I haven't heard the original so I can't compare.

Moving right along, we hit another winner: the slinky midnight groove of Crybaby. Unable to sleep and feeling down, Mariah thinks back on a past lover. She's got a new guy, but even though he's the best thing since sliced bread she can't get over her ex. "Late at night like a little child/Wandering around alone in my new friend's home/On my tippy toes/So that he won't know/I still cry, baby/Over you and me", she softly coos. Snoop plays the role of the ex and teasingly reminds her that letting him go was a big mistake. It's a top notch head bobber.

I know I should hate Did I Do That?, but there's something about it's quirkiness that I love. Turning the tables on the heartbreaker, Mariah coyly taunts him for letting her go. It's cool though since she's got a new man. "I found a love I can call my own/And I owe it in part to you." The song samples Master P's It Ain't My Fault so he and the annoying Mystikal are featured as well, but it doesn't take away from the song too much.

Thunder and rain opens the painfully personal ballad Petals. Mariah opens up about her fractured relationship with her older sister who was addicted to drugs and prostituting herself at the time. "And I miss you dandelion/And even love you/And I wish there was a way/For me to trust you/But it hurts me every time/I try to touch you/But I miss you dandelion/And even love you." The rest of the song covers her divorce, her pain over not being able to see her step kids, and people who've betrayed her in the past. Her last few lines to Tommy are telling. "And I missed a lot of life/But l'II recover/Though I know you really like/To see me suffer/Still I wish that you and I'd/Forgive each other/Cause I miss you, Valentine/And really loved you/I really loved you/I tried so hard/But you drove me away/To preserve my sanity/And I found the strength to break away."

The rain stops and it's sounds like the sun is shining on the interlude that should've been a full song Rainbow. Although times are tough, Mariah knows she'll be alright if she keeps moving forward.

The last song is not one of my favs. Thank God I Found You reeks of cheese and it's too sickeningly sweet for my tastes. Now the Keith Sweat sampled Make It Last Remix with Joe minus 98 Degrees is where it's at! Silky and soulful.

Rainbow hits a few (or more) snags, but it stands up pretty well. It's worth a spin.
