Music reviews of Merry Christmas II YouMusic Review: you can't have a Merry Christmas without MC! Rating: 5 Stars
Let me first start out by saying this album really showcases the type of artist Mariah Carey is. Her uncanny ability to write a great song that evokes FEELINGS in the listener to her incomparable vocal stylings...this album represents truly where Mariah Carey is in her career right now. The "grown" and "mature" sound of the album is a good look... Track by track review!
1. "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" - This is a full out orchestra instrumental, u can practically SEE the snow falling, ur breathe in the air and smell the Evergreens! It sets the tone for the rest of album's sound musically.
2. "Oh Santa" - We all know this! Now when I first heard it I cannot lie, I was a little disappointed with the vocals and busy production. But after repeated listens the production adds to the hype of the song and overall feeling! The song is more about production and melody than a big vocal performance! The melody is infectious and will be stuck in head after just one listen. As for the vocals, she sang in her nasal full voice with a piercing and creative high note at the end. The background vocalist really shine on here as well.
3. "O Little Town of Bethlehem" / "Little Drummer Boy - Slow at pace, but heavy in emotion and feeling. Mariah takes her time while singing this, and indulges in melisma (the singing style she used most during Daydream, Butterfly and Rainbow era) only to build up to a great climax of vocals. She is just SAAANGIN...what makes these two tracks fresh is Mariah's new arrangement. The "rum pum pum pum"s are so creative and so Mariah and its her vocal interpretation that make it so fresh and new! I love how she says "PROCLAAAIM!" at the climax of the song! It's a Mariah'ism only the lambs will understand lol.
4. "Christmas Time Is In The Air Again" - This is my FAVORITE track. All the lyrics were written by Mariah alone. It sounds like a 1940s Bing Crosby standard and just exudes the feeling of Christmas, especially in lyrics and production. She sings in a mature whisper/raspy register throughout which makes it seem like she's singing in your ear. This is the type of song you listen to with a nice hot cup of cocoa, wrapped up tight by the fire, watching the snow fall down with family. Its just BEAUTIFUL! The orchestra was a perfect touch. Her voice sounds very strong here, however, her falsetto is airy (but it works).
5. "The First Noel" / "Born is the King" (Interlude)- The First Noel she starts over very subduded and is just straight-out singing, stretching the word NOEL only the way Mariah Carey can, leading up to an unleashing of her full, smooth, clear belts. The best belts since MIMI era! Next is Born Is The King, which serves as a great Butterfly esque track. Its has HARD THUMPING BEAT, sensual production, yes sensual and an addictive refrain of the title while Mariah's coos religious lyrics in the background! Its simply sublime, a surprise and a fan favorite! I was not expecting it but its the kind of track that makes you stop everything you're doing and listen closely.
6. "When Christmas Comes" - Second favorite song of CD and also the 3rd of 4 original compositions by Mariah Carey. This sounds like vocally and musically it could be an outtake from the MIMI era which is great news, because her voice is on! She sings this completely in FULL VOICE, which is a nice departure from her most recent vocal stylings. The vocals are like STAY THE NIGHT, big and loud throughout the whole song. WCC gives a "This Christmas" by D. Hathaway vibe, its an ole school, 70s, soul Christmas classic in the making! The highnote at the end is identical to the one in Oh Santa. It really makes you wanna just curl up and spend the holidays with that special someone. Best vocal thus far..
7. "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" / "Housetop Celebration" - Second track produced by Mariah, JD and Brian Michael Cox (We Belong Together) and its an urban, house party, throwback jam..with a 90s feel. At first listen I was turned off by the layered vocals and busy sounding production (same first thought with Oh Santa) but after repeated listens you began to appreciate tho two Mariah voices on the verses, similar to Melt Away, with one Mariah singing the low reg and the other singing high. I prefer single vocal tracks, but whatever. The song will def get the party started and the gift giving going lol. I LOVE the jazzy 'santa claus is comin to town' sung in a monotone low register at the end repeated.
8. "Charlie Brown Christmas" - Beautiful slice of childhood. Very nostalgic. The slowest song on album after the Charlie Brown festive intro and song almost completely in a raspy whisper. Gorgeous.
9. "O Come All Ye Faithful" / "Hallelujah Chorus" (featuring Patricia Carey)" - Can we just have a moment of silence to appreciate the masterpiece that IS this track. It begins with Mariah's whisper register (she uses it throughout this album but to her advantage, not as a distraction or an attempt to NOT sing like many accused Charmbracelet of) on first verse and a full voice chorus with backing choir. Then comes Mrs. Patricia's AMAZING OPERATIC SOLO! Her voice is the reason Mariah sounds the way she does. Mrs. Pat is a talented, skilled vocalist, her voice reminds of Susan Boyles (that's a compliment!) in its fullness, tone, and enunciation! Simply SUPERB! I have to be honest, when I first heard the song I was more IMPRESSED by it than anything else, meaning someone people may think its just a show off song and Mariah neglected any emotion but that's NOT true! You definitely FEEL.
10. O Holy Night (Live) - This is the live version recorded in 2000, there is also a music video (filmed in 2000) that goes with it. I'm glad it was included because it's an EPIC live rendition that needs to be on record. The main difference between this and the 1994 version is her style of singing. In 2000 she was still very full voiced with a lot of power but she started to explore her whisper register a lot more and a dynamic of melismatic changes throughout the verses instead of just singing the words straight out. Its very pretty and truly what sets Mariah apart from her peers and why the way she sings her songs are uncover able. Those in love with her high notes and famous range will find plenty of upper register trills in this, especially throughout the climax! She really takes it to church on this one! This has a live feel with background clapping, audience noise and praise. Melonie Daniels and Maryann Tatum are the only ones on backup besides choir. The only draw back about this track being on the album is that it brings to the forefront the changes (her voice does change with every album, except 1990-1994) in her voice over the last 10 years...still a STAND OUT!
11. One Child - This retelling of the story of Christ was written by Mariah Carey and Marc Shaiman. Mariah did the lyrics by herself and majority of melody. This song is sung in a full voiced tone throughout building to a belting extravaganza of a climax! Mariah goes off and her voice just soars up into the rafters. The back up singers provide great support and add that gospel feel that most of the album exudes. The child chorus is reminiscent of a Michael Jackson type track, but Mariah's vocals still are at the forefront throughout. Her belts are loud, full, clear and powerful and not scratchy or the least bit raspy. Vocals are very pure and DO NOT SOUND DIGITALLY ENHANCED. It is much in the style of her earlier singing. She ends the song in a melimatic falsetto that dips into her lower chocolate smooth tones.
12. All I Want For Christmas Is You (Extra Festive) - The Disney-like/Broadway intro is pure magic and fully embodies Christmas. The is a completely re-done vocal that sounds pretty identical to the original.. Mariah adds a few extra ad libs and fully completes the song..Whereas the original version would fade out just when Mariah got to the outro ad libs...this one does not. The chorus is beefed up with Melonie and Maryann's vocals and the song overall has a much HARDER bass line that bangs with the right speakers! Mariah's vocal is of 2010, but she sings it in the same style as 1994 and you can hardly tell the difference, but at the same time you can. Her belts are powerful and clear and makes you wish she sang more songs this full out and with this much energy! This song still has the excitement as the OG version but is indeed extra festive! I love the end "All I want..all I really want all I really want..." to the end--- she only did that once in 1998 Butterfly tour performance! It was a great idea to add this new recorded version to the album for those that can't decide which to buy..
13. Auld Lang Syne - The song has a loud, full voice, belted intro which showcases what we fell in love with 20 years ago. THE VOICE! The song then segues into an electro dance number full of boisterous background vocals, thumping base line, repetivie chorus, and funky ad libs by the Diva! Rihanna and Kesha better count their lucky stars Mariah doesn't put out a full on dance album and crush them! Lol. But seriously it's a great way to end the album and end the year. Plus the background vocals feature Melonie very heavily..her voice is indescribable as well! The high note at the end is loud and pure, her voice was a great vocal form.
