Music Review: A Mariah Little Christmas

I recenrtly "inherited" a bunch of holiday CDs and discovered something interesting. Listening to Christmas music all winter long can help keep the blahs away and the homefires glowing. Of course, when you still grinning like an idiot on Groundhog's Day and wishing people "Season's Greetings" (hey groundhogs have seasons too), people tend to take their winter doldrums out on YOU. So be careful out there.
So anyway, what to think of this Mariah holiday effort? Not bad. I don't listen to Mariah all that much. She can indeed be over the top, as her critics maintain. On the other hand, she's got talent (sort of like Britain and America), and I do find that dismissing singers out of hand because you don't like their style can come back and haunt you if they just change their style a tad, but enough so that you start to like them in spite of yourself. It happened to me with Pat Benatar, when one day I found myself humming "We Belong" and some of those other mid-80s numbers.
It's pretty inevitable that if you can pull all the vocal tricks that Mariah can (or could), you're gonna use 'em. I can't fault her for showing off from time to time--or even most of the time. Still I have to agree with those who maintain that she goes from gospel stuff to what appears to be outtakes from THE LOST PHIL SPECTOR CHRISTMAS ALBUM. I like the gospel stuff.

SME. 2005.She's been hailed for her multi-octave vocal range--a tool that sometimes detracts from her pop recordings, but actually works quite beautifully in the context of this charming holiday collection. Fans will surely approve of Carey's renditions of slinky secular songs like "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" and a nicely subdued "All I Want for Christmas Is You." But where she really surprises is in her unadorned delivery of a passel of traditional carols, highlighted by "Silent Night" (which she sings quietly, avoiding the temptation to wail those high notes) and "Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child." A must for diehards, and a pleasant surprise for the unconverted. --David Sprague
