Music reviews of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel

Music Review: Song by Song Review!
Rating: 4 Stars

18 months after the release of E=MC2, Mariah is already back on the scene with an album that just might give her another number one or two. Here is my song-by-song review of the album. I did leave off the 4 remixes off the second c.d. in the deluxe edition. You've heard one remix of "Obsessed" then you've heard them all.

1. BETCHA GON' KNOW (THE PROLOGUE)
This song I had to listen to a few times before I actually liked it. The lyrics are very interesting. It's not typical Mariah by any means. It's very dark, and sinister, but also very sensual. The song reflects on catching her lover involved with someone else in their own home. Even though we don't get Mariah's full vocals, as I was expecting we would hear in the first song, they aren't needed. The song is perfection. Lyrically and musically.

2. OBSESSED
From the opening "So-Oh-Oh-Oh-Oh" it was sure this was going to fly to the top of the charts. Peaking at number 7, it secured Mariah Carey her 27th top ten hit. Catchy rhythm, amusing lyrics ("see right through ya like ya bathin' in Windex") and a remix with Gucci Mane that secured her spot back in the R&B/Hip Hop radio airplay, a feat she was rumored to have been leaving behind for this album. Sure, we're all tired of hearing it now. Sure, we were tired of the awkward, yet some-what entertaining, feud it spawned with Eminem. However, the fact is, The Dream, Tricky Stewart and Mariah Carey are proving to be a force to be reckoned with.

3. H.A.T.E.U.
This song is definitely headed for radio. I hope it happens soon. This song might actually be one of 3 songs on the album that has number 1 written all over it. A ballad that showcases Mariah's vocals. The song speaks on having her lover feel the pain that she feels after they have broken up. They lyrics in this song definitely make you have one of those "Been there" moments. And her vocals are on point. the last 20 seconds of the song is not only what we like about Mariah, but also what has kept her in this industry for so long. After the absence of these type of vocals on the first 2 songs, this was the perfect song to introduce us to the Mariah we have been accustomed to.

4. CANDY BLING
The catchy way she sings the verses of the song with definitely pull you in. This song actually reminds me of a Babyface tune that was never released. And trust me, that is a compliment. Vocals are kept to a minimum on this track as well, but, it works. Definitely a stand out track for me. This one you'll probably find yourself placing on repeat.

5. RIBBON
My least favorite track on the album. The chorus is catchy but sadly I feel that is the only part that might actually save this song from being instantly forgot about after the first listen. I mean of course, even Mariah has album fillers, but I was just expecting more. It even sounds like the vocals at the end of the song are strained and weak. Take a listen, but more than likely, you'll ultimately pass it up.

6. INSEPERABLE
My favorite song on "Memoirs..." Classic Mariah. Radio friendly. This song takes you on a journey of not being able to get over a past love. Vocals are awesome including a few High C notes at the climax of the song. I do have to admit this song feels like it might have been a left over from E=MC2. Whatever the case maybe, it's brilliant.

7. STANDING O
This has The Dream written all over it. And for that reason alone, it's not a stand out track for me. It's a decent song. Beautifully song and nice concept, but just didn't do it for. This one touches on a lover who only pretended to be in love with Mariah and she gives him a Standing O for his wonderful performance. Imagine Rihanna's "Take a Bow" for adults. Good attempt but just a little lackluster for me. Another filler.

8. IT'S A WRAP
Stunning vocals. Great production. Lyrics are okay but can be overlooked ("it's goin' down like a denominator"). This song has an old Motown sound. Tired of her lover doing her wrong she finally takes a stand and tells him it's over. Attitude comes across strong and believable in this track, leaving me thoroughly impressed.

9. UP OUT MY FACE
Catchy tune. Makes you want to learn the lyrics and sing a long from the first few lines. This might possibly be a single, and another one that has The Dream written all over it. This track follows Mariah as she tries to get away from a lover who just doesn't understand that it's over. Clever lyrics that I thought were a little childish at first. Then after understanding what she was singing about I completely understood the lyrics and now recognize them as pure genius. Definitely chart bound.

10. UP OUT MY FACE (REPRISE)
This reprise repeat the title over again in an almost Drumline kind of tune. Not sure why this is on the album at all. It's a little confusing and after the first 15 seconds I skipped through it. (I did listen to the whole song for this review and was still not impressed). I'm sure you'll find yourself skipping this one after the first few seconds.

11. MORE THAN JUST FRIENDS
Title of this track says it all. Cleverly written and the rhythm and beat will have you bumping this one in your cars in no time. Vocals are decent although at this point in the album you're still waiting for the vocals you expect to hear from Mariah. It seems like "Inseparable" was a just a tease. When she does open on this track towards the end it, again, sounds like her vocals were strained. Mariah we know you got, we just want to hear it...

12. THE IMPOSSIBLE
In this tune Mariah thanks her significant other for loving her which, until that moment, seemed impossible by others. Another one where Mariah shows us her lyrical genius. Definitely another filler but this one is quite entertaining and impressive.

13. THE IMPOSSIBLE (THE REPRISE)
Again, not quite sure why this is here. This sounds as if it is the end of the original song that has been dragged out for no apparent reason. Next...

14. ANGEL (PRELUDE)
A very pretty introduction, to what I believe to be the best song on the album.

15. ANGELS CRY
Now remember "Inseparable" I said was my favorite, however, this song has potential to have a huge chart impact. The second of the three songs which I believe can go to number one if released as a single. There is so much emotion and conviction in this song. Lyrics are gorgeous. The High C at the beginning still gives me chills. This song tell the story of having Mariah and the love of her life drift part. And how love is a gift from God. Amazing story. And FINALLY we get the vocals we were waiting for! Classic Mariah! This song makes the whole song worth the purchase.

16. LANGUISHING (THE INTERLUDE)
I was quick to be ready to fast forward when I saw it was an interlude. However, I listened to it for this review and was inpressed. It brought me back to the "Butterfly" days of Mariah Carey. Stunning vocals, interesting lyrics and a nice piano leading the music. Excellent!

17. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS
After covering everything from Journey to Michael Jackson, I was wondering what else was left. And I couldn't have been more happy when I found out Mariah was covering this track. Now her second single (which has not charted as of yet in the U.S.), Mariah has proved that she can make a song her own, and have as much success with it as the original artist. This cover was remarkably done. Flawless production, flawless vocals and definitely the perfect ending to an almost perfect album. Once again we get the vocals and the notes we love to hear from Mariah. This is also my pick for the possible 3rd number one hit off of this album.

OVER ALL:
Over all I give this album 4 stars. I'm sure it would have gotten five if it wasn't for the obvious album fillers, unnecessary reprises, and often refrained vocals. Mariah has showed that she's not going anywhere soon. She's got more hits to turn out, and is determined to make her mark with this album. The Dream and Tricky have crafted a well rounded album for a well rounded talent. Mariah Carey fans should be, and will be nothing but impressed with this album. Go grab it!

Description of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is packaged in a beautiful 3-panel softpack. A must-have for all Mariah fans, it will include: - The CD - A 2nd Enhanced CD featuring the "Obsessed" video, a remix video, and 3 remixes

- a 36 page Elle mini-magazine that's an inside look at Mariah.

First came the emancipation, then came energy and power, and now come Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, the new album by international superstar Mariah Carey, scheduled to arrive on September 29th. The first new single pick from Memoirs is "Obsessed,". The video for "Obsessed" is directed by Brett Ratner. "Obsessed" was written and produced by Mariah, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who are responsible for the majority of tracks on the new album. Memoirs was executive-produced by Antonio "L.A." Reid. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, the 12th studio album of Mariah's career, is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to her RIAA platinum-selling album E=MC˛ (released April 15, 2008), and her worldwide 10 million selling The Emancipation Of Mimi (released April 12, 2005). Both were Soundscan #1 debut albums that made chart history for Mariah in the U.S. and numerous territories around the globe.

The Emancipation Of Mimi generated three Grammy awards (including Best Contemporary R&B Album), two #1 singles, and countless more honors during its 18-month chart stay. The album debuted at #1 on first week sales of 404,000 copies, Mariah's highest first week sales total (until E=MC˛;). Soundscan's biggest-selling album of 2005, Mimi featured "We Belong Together" (Grammy winner for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song) and "Don't Forget About Us," Mariah's 16th and 17th #1 career singles respectively. They tied one of the most enduring chart records in Billboard Hot 100 history, Elvis Presley's 17 #1's.

Three years later, E=MC˛; debuted at #1 on first week sales of 463,000 copies, which now stands as the highest first week sales total of Mariah's career. The album's success brought total sales of Mariah's albums, singles and videos to more than 160 million worldwide, distancing her even further from the pack as the top-selling female recording artist in history.

E=MC˛ spun off four singles: "Touch My Body," "Bye Bye," "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time," and "I Stay In Love." Of these, "Touch My Body" made history when it became Mariah's 18th #1 Hot 100 hit, thus surpassing Elvis Presley. "Touch My Body"'s two weeks at the top also marked Mariah's 78th and 79th cumulative career weeks at #1, which tied Elvis' long-standing all-time high of 79 weeks at #1, as calculated in Billboard.com. At the same time, Mariah is now positioned as the only active recording artist in the 50 years of the Hot 100 (which began in 1958) with the potential to surpass the Beatles' all-time high of 20 #1 hits.
