Music reviews of Coverage

Music Review: Coverage seems almost original!
Rating: 5 Stars

Back in 1999, when Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Mandy Moore all became the "it" girls, I couldn't and didn't want to tell the difference between all three of them. I wasn't interested in what they had to offer to this world, who already is fed up with enough teen pop- it, along with rap and r&b, is clogging up the record business. You hardly see any good music out there, because most of the stuff they're putting out is all about explicit lyrics, bad vocals, or no talent whatsoever. Mandy Moore has truly come into her own skin and has produced a record decent for all ages.

Her voice isn't the greatest, but she can certainly top some of the chart-toppers, such as Britney Spears and Eminem, two "singers" who shouldn't have albums out anyway, due to complete lack of talent. Sure, this is reminiscing teen pop, but it's better than Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan- it's pure.

1.Senses Working Overtime- This is one of those unique songs you don't find anywhere but in the arms of a totally good singer. The lyrics are quite interesting, and the tune is very outstanding, plus Moore adds some superb vocals to the already superb song. This song makes you want to look at the world in a whole new way. 10/10

2.The Whole Of The Moon- I skip this one a lot because it's quite lengthy. The lyrics are good until you get to the middle where she starts talking about unicorns. Unicorns are great, but in a mature song I think not. This is one I can listen to but I don't listen to alot. 7/10

3.Can We Still Be Friends?- This is one of my favorite songs on the album. I used to not like it because I hated all the "Lalalas" in the middle, something I usually never find myself enjoying. But now when I listen to it I can accept them. This is one of the only songs I like with "Lala" in it for a good reason- it's a superb song! 10/10

4.I Feel The Earth Move- This is my favorite song on the album because it's cute, yet very powerful. Moore's vocals are at their best in this amazing, one-of-a-kind song that the one and only Carole King wrote. It's a very fun song to sing, if you have a good voice;) 10/10

5.Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters- I thought this was going to be some new age, pointless song. I was very wrong. This is a true treasure waiting to be found. I was blown away the first time I heard it because of the beauty this song brings. There will be no time to give this one, because it's one you must love at first hearing! The lyrics, like "Senses", are very interesting and beautiful. 10/10

6.Drop The Pilot- Another favorite of mine. The lyrics are odd, but the tune is good. Again, Moore's voice shines in this song. I had never heard this song before, but I'm glad she made a remake or I would be missing out on alot. Of course, the tune is the reason it's a favorite- I've tried to figure this song out but never could. 10/10

7.Moonshadow- I really like this song, especially the riff. It's so clear and beautiful and makes you think that you really are on a moonshadow. This song has become better as I listen more. 10/10

8.One Way Or Another- Yes, many people groan over how this is the umpteenth time this song has been covered, but I can't get enough of this song. From the guitar at the beginning to the exceptionally strong vocals at the end, you have to love it all. 10/10

9.Breaking Us In Two- Not one I listen to very often. I don't know....Just kind of boring...drags on. 9/10

10.Anticipation- One I've grown on. Very impresseve vocals, Miss Moore! 10/10

11.Help Me- See #9. 9/10

12.Have A Little Faith In Me- This is my 2nd favorite song on the album. It is so beautiful and great for a love song. I think this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. It's also a ton of fun to sing! 10/10

As I've said before, Mandy is still the teen pop icon (or should be) but she does have talent. She started at a young age and worked her way up. It's time for her to have the spotlight.

Description of Coverage

In a pop world where history is rarely acknowledged beyond whatever American Idol dishes out, Mandy Moore has discovered a stash of old records. The 19-year-old singer-actress who first appeared with 1999?s "So Real" has now decided to stretch her artistry with a dozen ?70s and ?80s touchstones. The results are mixed, but in the end Coverage is a success. Never over singing just because she can, but in proudly good voice, she brings worthy new shades to XTC?s "Senses Working Overtime," Todd Rundgren?s "Can We Still Be Friends" and Blondie?s "One Way or Another," while acknowledging the breakthroughs of Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Carly Simon . Whether she?ll continue to follow this path is unknown, but this CD is an achievement Moore can be proud of. --Heather Court
