Music Review: Well....this IS her best, I guess, but.......

I was kind of surprised when I discovered that Mandy Moore, of all people, was releasing a Best Of album. She's only had like three or four actual radio hits. It made more sense when I discovered that this release was out of her control-yes, as I'm sure fans already know, she is changing record labels and Sony wanted to make one last quick buck off of her music. Anyways, this is definitely her at her very best-and the only CD to buy if you're a casual Mandy Moore fan. It comes with a DVD containing all of her music videos and a few AOL performances. To make things simple, I'll review the song and its accompanying video at once:
CANDY- This was Mandy's first hit ever, and you can kind of tell-*very* immature, sugary sound and lyrics. Catchy and fun, though. Innocuous fluff with no point other than to please the ears-or annoy them, depending on your taste. The video is just as sugary sweet and fluffy as the song itself-although, I was kind of surprised the video didn't make its theme more directed towards...well, candy. It was just her and some friends dancing in front of a diner and then in a skate park. SONG: 4/5 VIDEO: 3/5
WALK ME HOME- Also from her first album-and just as fluffy and airy as her first hit. Sweet and pointless, once again. The video is rather 'pretty.' Lots of make-up, snow and sparkles. Airheaded but innocent and cute. SONG: 3/5 VIDEO: 4/5
SO REAL- This was really never a 'hit,' but it was made into a video and a single. Pretty good; I think it's better than "Walk Me Home." Fun, catchy. But once again, airy and empty. The video, however, is VERY fun, cute and pretty. Has a sort of Alice In Wonderland feel. SONG: 4/5 VIDEO: 5/5
I WANNA BE WITH YOU- This song is SO boring. I really don't like it. The video is just as boring. It's her sitting around in a library and then watching her crush do ballet or something. SONG: 0/5 VIDEO: 0/5
IN MY POCKET- This is her only actual 'dance' song, and I personally think it is her best song of all time. Insanely catchy, with an unbelievable, Middle-Eastern-inspired beat and background effects. I love listening to this song, it's awesome. And it even has meaningful, witty lyrics. It's true that this video is the closest to sexiness she ever gets, but calling it a 'body-ogling soft-porn orgy' (as one other reviewer did) is downright slander. Save a term like that for Britney's "I'm A Slave 4 U" or Christina's "Dirrty." I think this video is actually very cool, very exciting, very exotic. It's true they could have done better-the video doesn't match the lyrics, but it does match the beat. Anyways, either way, this song rocks. SONG: 5/5 VIDEO: 4/5
CRUSH- This song is fun, sweet, and simple. And yet it has meatier lyrics than most of her earlier stuff. There have been many songs of its kind, but THIS masterfully captures the true feeling of having a crush on someone. Not my favorite, because though it's catchy, it's kind of boring and not nearly as explosive as "In My Pocket." But sweet. The video is very natural-feeling, very simple, and fun. But the part where she's in bed with him is stupid. SONG: 4/5 VIDEO: 3/5
CRY- This is a very beautiful song. Very deep lyrics; you can get a story going inside your head. Catchy chorus, sweet, mellow melody. But a tad generic and reminiscent of "Crush." The video is gorgeous, but a tad disappointing because....NO ONE CRIES!!! The whole point of the song is lost. But it's 'pretty.' SONG: 4/5 VIDEO: 3/5
ONLY HOPE- This is a sweet little ballad, but it gets boring after a while. The chorus is beautiful, but....I just am not feeling this song. Deep lyrics, though. There was no video made of it. 3/5
HAVE A LITTLE FAITH IN ME- I kind of like this song-by far the best song off of Coverage. Very mellow, relaxing, soothing-and yet catchy melody. A very good cover. Also, a MUCH more developed, mature sound than her early stuff. Her voice also sounds far more developed. She sounds young and chirpy in a few of the early tracks, but here she's at her best vocally. The video is kind of boring-she went from a bouncy, gum-chewing teenybopper to a dull, not-spectacularly-interesting Cher/Norah Jones wannabe. Though it's nice she has matured, she should stick to pop.....her most recent music I suppose has more substance than her earliest songs, but she went from one generic form of music to another. I think she should stick with what kept her on the radio-but meatier lyrics would be nice. SONG: 4/5 VIDEO: 3/5
CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS- This song's okay. A tad boring, nothing special. The lyrics are repetitive. There was no video made of this. 2/5
SENSES WORKING OVERTIME- This one's sort of fun; a more upbeat, catchy melody than her other covers. But once again, not enough to be really enjoyable. Just another folky, old-fashioned-sounding cover. No video. 3/5
I FEEL THE EARTH MOVE- This one's alright. But once again, not that great. Too old-fashioned and folky for me. No video. 2/5
TOP OF THE WORLD- This one is actually pretty good. I like the chorus. Might be better than "Have A Little Faith In Me." Catchy, sweet, relaxing. No video. 4/5
SECRET LOVE- OH MY GOD this one is SO slow. It will put you to sleep. Pretty, I guess, but Mandy is trying to flaunt her voice a bit too much in these ballads. She has a very good voice, but it gets tiring hearing her do nothing but strain her way through ballads. Do more dance songs!! Why she only used "In My Pocket"'s formula once I have no clue. It REALLY sounds like a Disney song. Pretty background music, but....ugh.....I just can't handle ballads like this. No video. 2/5
Anyways, this is definitely the best Mandy's got to offer-so like I said, if you've got only mild interest in her music, get this. Out of all the young female singers out there today (particularly the teen tarts), Mandy is who I have the most respect for, because she has kept her clothes on and hasn't once gotten slutty in her music. She is genuinely maturing-not only maturing sexually, as the rest of our stupid planet seems to be doing. Anyways, this has all of her hits and then a pile of filler from her Coverage album....which will please some more than others. There are some awesome songs (In My Pocket, Cry, Crush), some good songs (Candy, So Real, Have A Little Faith In Me), and, well, some crappy songs (I Wanna Be With You, Secret Love, I Feel The Earth Move). Overall, a good word to describe this collection is 'quaint.' It's a nice, sweet, simple, short listen that might put a smile on your face. Plus, a damn good deal-all of her hits AND a DVD containing every single one of her music videos. And it's Mandy at her very best. But hopefully one day she'll be able to release a truly excellent hits collection.
