Music Review: Unknown Legend

Mandy Barnett was completely unknown to me, until I went to the Grand Old Opry just to say I had been too it. Well there were nice old classic acts and fine music in an OLD style.
Then this nice looking young lady comes out... WHOAH!!! where did THIS voice come from. She sang one number and pinned my ears back. I gave her a one man standing ovation until the MC, Porter Wagner, gave me a dirtylook to sit down. 3 days later I was seeing the western swing band the Time Jumpers. Who should be there but Miss Barnett who sang 2 songs with the band, and again quite amazingly, and in a different style. Next day I bought both her 2 available albums, and have enjoyed them immensely ever since.
I am normally not into ladies singing ballades,
but Mandy and Eva Cassidy break that rule.
Album one was right in the direction of Nashville country in the middle 90's and I suspect if it had the songs in a different order it would have done MUCH better. it did do pretty good. They pushed the wrong single IMHO. It still was a fine album, but lacking a follow up.. Here's why.
Album two was the last album produced by Patsy Cline's producer, the legendary Owen Bradly, who passed away during production and his brother finished it. He was a super producer in his day, but IMHO his day had passed stylisticly.
He was a master producer, but times had changed.
He did a 'fantastic' ablum for Mandy, BUT it was VERY out of time. It would have been a blockbuster in 1962,but in 2002+or- wouldn't fit in a current country music nitche. And it didn't.
I guess if a legendary producer of one of my main influences offered to produce an album for me I WOULDN'T SAY NO... But in this case it shot her career in the foot as far as making it in the current market. And since then the money people have seemed to think it was her voice and looks that killed the deal. Totally wrong. Not at all.
It was an 'almost made it' album with no follow up in the same vein. The follow up was lovely, but 40 years out of date, and so far out of the market it never had a chance. It has NOTHING to do with her voice or personality.
They have been utter idiots and lost millions of dollars by not backing her properly. IMHO! This is a big time class voice, mis-handled badly by producers and lable weenies. (nothing against Mr Bradly; he did what he did best)
I am a independent musician, engineer and producer, I can't think of ONE voice that I would more like to produce than Mandy Barnett's. Why no one has produced an album for her fitting the times since then, I have no clue.
She can sing Patsy, Linda Rohnstadt, Emmie Lou, Connie, and sing under the table most all of the current crop of 'Nashville girls' too.
If this lady walked onto American Idol no one else would be standing. And Simon would be silent, but with a contract and pen in hand...If you like any of these country styles of the last 50 years, just get this album.
