Music Review: A nice change of pace but not as good as I once thought

Mandy Barnett made her name in "Always", a stage play about Patsy Cline. It's easy to see why...you can hear the ghost of Cline in Barnett's vocals. Here, she trades on it whole-hog, recording at Bradley's Barn, enlisting Owen himself to produce 4 of the songs ("I've got a Right to Cry","The Whispering Wind (Blows on by)","Mistakes" and "Don't Forget to Cry"), and recording some classic country tunes to emphasis the throwback sound (Don Gibson's "Give Myself a Party" and Porter Wagoner's "Trademark").
I remember being absolutely awestruck when I first heard this and it's easy to see why: at the time (1999) there really was nothing, save a few Leann Rimes efforts, that sounded like her on the market. Now that I've had a few years to go back to it and listen more critically, I see there are a few cracks in the veneer.
Best tracks here are the sprightly "Who (Will it be?)", where Barnett soars light as a feather over the track, two of Bradley's tracks highlight how good countrypolitan could sound on "The Whispering Wind" and "With my Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming", and a cover of the Mickey Newbury tune "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings" also sparkles.
Low spots here are her take on Porter's "Trademark", the title tune and "Don't Forget to Cry". On this trio, Barnett sounds as though she's forcing the catch into her voice and making sure to twang so it's "authentic". She sounds better when she isn't reminding herself to make herself sound more Cline-like.
Bottom Line: If you love traditional country, there isn't much out in the market for you. This will be a breath of fresh air. However, don't think it's the second coming of Patsy yet. She still needs some seasoning to reach her potential, but she's got a great voice to do it with so who knows what the future holds?

Description of I've Got a Right to Cry
This Mandy Barnett CD is sure to get pegged as a Patsy Cline karaoke project--for one thing, because it was the last project of Cline's producer, the late and great Owen Bradley, and, for another, because Barnett got her break playing Cline in a stage play. With her sultry, powerful voice, Barnett can play the part to the hilt, but the Patsy connection only tells part of the story. The best cut here, "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings," is actually closer to the steel-driven '70s work Bradley did with Conway Twitty. Throughout the cuts pay tribute to a long tradition of catchy country, from Eddy Arnold and Carl Smith to Don Gibson and Hank Jr. But it's Patsy that Barnett most often channels. So, "Don't Forget to Cry," the title track, and others purr and swoon away like "Crazy," just as you'd expect, but they come off as trying too hard, too busy, slightly manic, full-tilt from note one. Still, Barnett's Patsy impersonation is really something. And until she finally lets us hear her own true voice, I've Got a Right is a charming countrypolitan trip down memory lane. --David CantwellCountry CDs
