Music reviews of The 7 Day Theory

Music Review: Classic album, from the greatest rapper ever.
Rating: 5 Stars

"Me Against the World" and "All Eyez on Me" are often the most phrased albums in Pac's catalog, but it was THIS album where Pac took his game to another level. His lyrics, delivery, flow, and songwriting were all elevated for this one. It is however, also his darkest album, both lyrically and musically. In many of the songs, such as Bomb First, Toss it Up, and Against all Odds, you can tell he is at a boiling point at the height of the east/west feud. Perhaps its these songs as to why this album is sometimes seen as too harsh and abrasive to be his best work, but songs like Hail Mary, Blasphemy, White Mans World, Me and My Girlfriend, and Hold Ya Head are what make this his most compelling album. These are some of the best songs hes ever recorded. The emotion and power displayed on these records is palpable. Pac was at his most focused on Me Against the World, and at his most charasmatic on All Eyez, but on this album he was clearly going through a turmoil that brought out both the best and worst in him. Krazy is probably the most reflective song here and would have been perfectly at home on Me Against the World. Pac also elevated his delivery on this album. Though he always poured emotion into his tracks, it was intensified on this album which give it a harder hitting and more powerful feel then his other albums. And for those who love Pac;s harder hitting tracks, theres Life of an Outlaw. To Live and Die in LA is the (superior) sequal to CA Love, in which Pac pays tribute to City of Angels which has shaped him as an artist. Last but not least you have tracks like Blasphemy and Hail Mary, which Pac displays lyricism and songwriting that is on another level, addressing the confusion and corruption of man through religion. On White Mans World, he returns to his political roots not seen since his first two albums.

The production on this album is top notch, possibly even exceeding the great beats that were used on All Eyez on Me. It was clear Pac wanted to prove he could still make dark and grimey records. Me And My Girlfriend for example features a dark and heavy bassline with a spanish guitar. This track overall is just bananas, Pac kills it lyrically and the beat is just one of the best ever made. Then you have more laid back tracks like Krazy, which has a nice piano loop and electric violin to compliment Pacs more reflective lyrics here. Pac was also proving his strength as a producer on this album, he produced most of Bomb First, and parts of Me and My Girlfriend and Hold Ya Head, the latter of which features a spectacular piano loop. And of course, the most famous song on the album, Hail Mary, features one of the darkest and most intoxicating hypnotic beats ever made. The only weakness on this album perhaps was Toss It Up, which is misplaced here I think. But this is hardly enough to bring down the overall greatness of this record.

Bottomline: A classic album that exceeded even All Eyez on Me and is on par with Me Against the World to arguably be Pac's best album. This is a must have in any hip hop fans collection. Pac in his prime, over some of the illest beats ever, what more can you ask for? They dont make records like this anymore. It is more then worth its 5 star average. Its right up there with the other hip hop classics Illmatic, 36 Chambers, It Takes A Nation, Chronic, Paid in Full, etc etc....Pac recorded a masterpiece with this one, buy it now. All in all, Pac's second best album, just BARELY behind Me Against the World.

Description of The 7 Day Theory

2Pac, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory

For this release, Tupac Shakur adopted the pseudonym "Makaveli" in honor of the philosopher Machiavelli, author of the devious politician's handbook The Prince. Contractually his final effort for Death Row, it was recorded in seven days and was released on schedule in October 1996, despite Shakur's death a month earlier. Shakur was unparalleled at balancing the upbeat and the morbidly grim, and tracks like "Toss It Up" are such wonderfully catchy pop songs that the nasty lyrical digs at his then-current crop of enemies seem almost subliminal. Not so with album closer "Against All Odds," in which Shakur spells out very explicitly who he thinks was responsible for his ambush shooting in New York City. Overall, the Makaveli album feels so much like one man's complete exorcism of an overload of pent-up personal and professional pressures that it's hard not to believe that Shakur had all eyes on a new direction for the future. --Gregg Turkington
