Music reviews of Mahler: Symphony No. 7 in E minor / Kindertotenlieder ~ Ozawa / Norman

Music Review: Hooray, an outright winner in Ozawa's Mahler cycle
Rating: 5 Stars

As an outsider to the Mahler tradition, Ozawa can sound like a Martian trying gamely to learn the rules of baseball. His complete cycle from the early Nineties is more or less forgotten, but I've been winnowing out the better installments (Philips recently reissued the whole cycle at music download sites). This Seventh Sym. from 1991 begins well -- not too strenuous, with solos from an exceptional tenor horn player. The pacing could be more energetic, but that holds for esteemed readings by Boulez and Chailly, too (not esteemed by me, I'm quick to add). All of Ozawa's Mahler has sections where he tunes out and loses his grip, falling back on a generic "elegance" that is misplaced in this music.

But the three inner movements -- two mysterious sections of "night music" and a Scherzo -- are rather well suited to a conductor stronger in atmosphere than propulsion. The BSO woodwind soloists pay with real character and are captured in very good, detailed sound. Ozawa's affinity for French music serves him well here; this is Mahler in the disguise of Ravel -- see 'La Valse's' morbid, seductive mood swings. I began to feel that this seventh must be the strongest installment in his whole cycle. But would the finale be carried off with the unembarrassed, raucous enthusiasm that it demands? I've never quite understood the faults that critics find in this movement, and happily, neither does Ozawa, who pitches in with a vengeance. A surreal circus has come to town, and nowhere does he hold back (this is so like Bernstein, Ozawa's mentor, that I wonder if he picked things up from him). The squealing trumpets aren't perfectly tuned -- a common failing -- but this isn't music that rewards carefulness, anyway.

The 'Kindertotenlieder' that fills out CD 2 is a marvel of Mahler singing from Jessye Norman at her most powerful and assured. I second the Gramophone reviewer when he says, "This live performance, recorded in December 1988 in Frankfurt, is vintage Norman, one of the very best things I've heard from her in recent times."

I'm thrilled to arrive at the conclusion that this is a first-rate Mahler Seventh, rivaling the best on records and far better played than many more famous ones.
