Music reviews of The Lost Trident Sessions

Music Review: Impressive Energy Level
Rating: 4 Stars

Yes, these sessions really were lost. Or at least the tapes of these sessions were lost, for more than 25 years. Recorded in London in June, 1973, this was to have been the third Columbia album released by the Mahavishnu Orchestra (John McLaughlin, guitar; Jerry Goodman, violin; Jan Hammer, keyboards; Rick Laird, bass; and Billy Cobham, drums). But because of internal disagreements among the band members and the heavy burden of touring (their third release was alive recording made in August, 1973, Between Nothingness and Eternity), the tapes were shelved and never produced for commercial release; eventually they just sort of disappeared in the vaults until they were discovered in 1998 by producer Bob Belden as he was gathering tapes for the Columbia/Legacy remastering of the band's second album, Birds of Fire. Twenty-six years after it was originally recorded, then, this album finally saw the light of day.

So, how is it? Pretty good, actually. It sounds a little dated, like most fusion music, and Cobham's drumming is as annoyingly overbusy as it ever was, but the sharp-edged intensity that was this group's stock in trade is there in abundance, and it is fun to hear a band that was just trying so darned hard to blow their listeners away with their composing and playing. This is relentless music, driving and driven, with even the quiet moments crackling with potential energy.

This is music that is meant to be played loud, and it will sound best played on a big system. The sound quality is on The Lost Trident Sessions is better than that on The Inner Mounting Flame, even the MFSL version.

If you like fusion, you'll love this release--Billy Cobham's relentless drumming notwithstanding. If you don't like fusion, though, you will probably find the music--and the hoopla surrounding this release--to be much ado about nothing. Still, the energy level is impressive, making this recording a giddy/guilty pleasure.

Description of The Lost Trident Sessions

Recorded during a brief stopover in London on June 25, 1973, these unprepossessing studio performances, despite (or maybe because of) the heavy compression (particularly on the drums) and a mixed-on-the-fly feel, convey far more of the edgy, go-for-broke energy, ferocious solo intensity, and telepathic interplay of Mahavishnu's peak 1973 live shows than their only live album (the August 12, 1973, Central Park performance caught on Between Nothingness & Eternity). McLaughlin's extended forms, "Dream" and "Trilogy," are made up of hyperkinetic blues vamps, classical elements from both the Western art music and Carnatic traditions, shifting minor modes and complex rhythmic cycles, while keyboardist Jan Hammer's "Sister Andrea" adds a welcome touch of funk to the formula. Unreleased tunes by violinist Jerry Goodman and bassist Rick Laird shed new light on their contributions to the band's overall repertoire, and everyone plays like their life depends on it--no one more so than Billy Cobham, whose ability to swing rock rhythms and depict a wide range of dynamic nuances is simply remarkable. Cobham's ferocious exchanges with the guitarist walk the line between Hendrix-style psychedelia and Coltrane-like dervish dances. A thrilling snapshot of fusion's musical possibilities before it all went sour. --Chip Stern
