Music Review: Only Christian Stuff in my MP3 Player

I'm a believer, but let's be honest: most of what passes for "Christian Music" is unartful, cliched, and embarrassing. When I ripped my CD collection to MP3's for my player, the only explicitly Christian music that made the cut was Rev. Blind Gary Davis and Mahalia Jackson.
I've had this set since the 90's and it's amazing. If I ever have company while it's playing, it always gets complimented. So accessible, so good, and so transporting. A quiet, rainy day with this set playing at medium-low volume is an experience not to be missed.
Also, it's one of the few sets I put on my MP3 player without leaving out a single song. There's not a clunker in the whole bunch.
Lastly, this music lasts and lasts. One of the small number of CD's I can put on after lots of listening through the years and not feel worn out on it. Even though it's highly emotional in its themes, it never leaves a sappy aftertaste. There is a certain distance from mushiness inherent in her vocal delivery. She never seems taken under by her feelings, but rather, on top of them. That's an important quality, and it even helps deliver the Gospel: "If you want your words to warm hearts, you must keep your language cool" - Chekhov*

Dorsey in the late 1930s, Jackson gave a distinctly blues-trained, jazzy sass and grace to Dorsey's material and the other hymns and spirituals she sang. More than any other performer, she helped to define gospel music itself as a transcendent, rootsy, melismatic, and heady spiritual sound. Culled from her sides for Columbia in the 1950s and 1960s, some of the arrangements in the set are not ideal and may sound quite a bit dated, but that voice shines and soars and dives straight to the center of your heart. Whether backed by a simple organ or piano or with full studio accompaniment, Jackson's booming, instantly recognizable contralto is indescribable, exciting, and forever a wonder to behold.
