Music Review: Lovely, lovely, lovely!

Mahalia, generally speaking DIDN'T record (or sing for that matter) jazz, soul, r&b and other genres;
but she had a high opinion of Duke's work and Duke's orchestra (not a huge surprise there) and he did give her a role that goes well with her religious convictions: she was to sing the religious segment of the African American historical experience... Something she was famous for...
So, this is not a typical Ellington orchestra album, but it's a great album nevertheless, with LOVELY and emotional contributions by Ray Nance, Harry Carney, John Sanders, Quentin Jackson, Cat Anderson, Shorty Baker (...) and the Duke himself.
Additional tracks (two of which I already have on my CBS Jazz Masterpieces "Blues in Orbit" CD - Duke Ellington: Blues in Orbit (Columbia Jazz Masterpieces))
are very, very welcome, even if they sometimes dilute the sheer beauty of the core performances of the album, the selected parts from "Black, Brown and Beige" suite. For me, Ellington's music shows continuous development from the late 1920s until the 1960s (I haven't yet listened to the last few years of his orchestrations) so, this peculiar album is something that will repeatedly find its way to my CD player.

The complete original classic album Black, Brown and Beige with Mahalia Jackson's poignant voice backed by the Ellington orchestra. Includes 16-page booklet.Following on the heels of the smashing, creative apex caught on The Blanton-Webster Years, Black, Brown & Beige encompasses segments of two suite-length works, Ellington's first long-form works. The segments from the set's title suite are rife with ambition, scoping historical motions while creating merely musical brilliance (small consolation indeed for not capturing the full flush of African American history's drama!). Billy Strayhorn's arranging and orchestration begins shading the Ellington band throughout this set, making it a gorgeously large unit that could spread its arms to embrace the richest melodies even while setting up soloists who tear the place up on their respective instruments. The bands are some of the best, featuring a well-built fullness that shows Ellington's complete awareness of each voice, from open-bore trumpet blasts to slack-toned saxophones. This is the Ellingtonian sound that Blanton-Webster sketched out and began to nurture. In its fullness, it's some historic big music, charting the ways bandleaders would use their sections for decades. And the creative successes taught Ellington that he could indeed proceed developing such large-scale, later works like The Far East Suite. --Andrew Bartlett
