Music reviews of True Blue

Music Review: Inconsistency is the Theme for this Collection
Rating: 3 Stars

Madonna's career would transform from the "Underground Dance Scene" to full-fledged pop superstar on her sophomore album "Like a Virgin". Madonna would burst on to the music scene with her debut self-titled "Madonna" album. This album would clearly play a role in bringing this "underground" movement into the pop music mainstream as well as catapult her own career. Along the way, this album would garner some commercial success - and by the way would be a pretty good album in its own right. When "Like a Virgin" would appear, it's controversial title track and video would help feed the commercial success of Madonna. However, "Like a Virgin" would bring Madonna much more toward the mainstream away from the "Underground Dance Scene" roots. By going more mainstream. the quality of her music product would diminish. By 1986, Madonna would now face the task that many artists face - finding commercial success for the third album in a row. Madonna would have no problem achieving album sales with her third album "True Blue". This album would continue the keep Madonna in the Pop Music mainstream, but also would allow Madonna to introduce some fresh ideas to her music. While I give Madonna credit for doing some new things, I can't say that the quality of this album can match the enormous commercial sales it generated.

One problem I've seen with Madonna's first three albums is that she has brought in different producers each time. On her first album Reggie Lucas, Jellybean Benitez, and Mark Kamins shared production duties. On her second album, Chic's Nile Rodgers would handle the production duties. For "True Blue", Madonna shares production duties with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray. While I don't think Leonard and Bray do a bad job, I don't think they did as a good a job as the producers on the first two albums. Artists truly benefit from having continuity with "the outside" voice of a producer over several albums. On this particular effort, I think there are some tracks that don't live up to expectations and could have been better.

The one positive thing is that Madonna does try some fresh ideas - both musically and lyrically. In some cases, this works - in other cases, it doesn't. Inconsistency seems to be the name of the game here. Here is a look at the nine tracks:

"Papa Don't Preach": This was a big hit song. Madonna did contribute some additional lyrics to Brian Elliot. We see Madonna tackle a "more serious theme" than on previous albums as she sings about an unplanned pregnancy. This song does feature some string arrangements. Madonna's debut album was such as success because of the raw emotion she brought to the vocals. I don't see that emotion on a song with a serious theme. This might have been a hit, but it is overrated.

"Open Your Heart": This was another hit song. This is the opposite of "Papa Don't Preach". I found Madonna's emotion level higher on this track. The music has a lot of intensity as well. It might have a pop feel, but there is some decent guitar work. This is a very good track.

"White Heat": This is a tribute to James Cagney and features some spoken words from his movies. I didn't like this track at first, but it grew on me and I can say it's a pretty good track. I'll fault Leonard and Bray somewhat because I don't think this song was mixed very well. Richard Marx contributes to the background vocals that compliment Madonna well.

"Live to Tell": This was a song from the motion picture "At Close Range". Madonna brings her raw emotion to this song. This collection includes the uncut version that is far superior to the radio edit. The haunting synthesizers are perfect for Madonna's vocals. I think this song could have worked without a Drum Machine.

"Where's the Party": There are some horns on this song, but it overall this song doesn't do much for me. Definitely the weakest track on the album.

"True Blue": This is another weak track. The background vocalists - Edie Lehmann and Siedah Garrett do an admirable job. I felt this song suffered from "campy" lyrics - something that has become common on Madonna albums.

"La Isla Bonita": Songwriters Madonna, Patrick Leonard, and Bruce Gaitsch hit a homerun on this song. While the lyrics aren't the deepest ones, the songwriters do a beautiful job in creating a Latin/Calypso/Tropical song about a place called "San Pedro". Madonna's raw emotion is right on form with this song. The Latin feel of the song is genuine - especially Gaitsch's guitar and some terrific percussion. I like how some spoken Spanish words are put into this song. With "Live to Tell", this is the strongest track.

"Jimmy Jimmy": This is a retro-style song that goes back to the 1960s girl bands. This is heavy Synthesizer-laden song. Madonna does all of the vocals and seems to be able to pull off the "girl band" style. I was very surprised this song didn't garner radio airplay or get released as a single. Again, not the strongest lyrics - but Madonna is able to give this song an genuine flavor.

"Love Makes the World Go Round": This is the album's wrap-up track. To some extent, there is a Latin influence on this track. However, this track didn't have me doing handstands. Like "White Heat", I didn't feel this was mixed very well.

This CD also features some remixes of "True Blue" and "La Isla Bonita". The liner notes include the lyrics, songwriting, production, and musician credits. Overall, while this album was a huge success - I found some tracks were better than others. I'm not sure if Madonna gained new fans because of this album, but her most loyal fans are not going to be disappointed. However if you are a mainstream Madonna fan - most likely it is going to be pick and choose.
