Music Reviews of Madonna

Music Review: The Beginning of the Revolution
Rating: 4 Stars

I'm not one for 80s music in general, but this album has held up surprisingly well over the years. It displays a Madonna before she decided to put any kind of message or controversy in her music. This music is all fluff, plain and simple. But there is no denying it's entertaining.
Lucky Star: 4/5 This track is bubbly and playful. It's nothing special, but nothing to scoff at.
Borderline: 4/5 For some reason I think if Elton John had sung this it would have been better. Not bad.
Burning Up: 5/5 My favorite track. It's sexy and driven. It just makes you want to roll around in reckless abandon.
I Know It: 5/5 Another Winner. It's a lost Madonna gem.
Think of Me: 3/5 Don't really like this one much. It's whiny and employs a lame saxophone solo.
Physical Attraction: This one's catchy, but it just goes on forever. It's nearly 7 minutes long.
Everybody: 5/5 Another great song. It's a great way to end the album. It was also Madonna's first single.
This album is for 80s dance music buffs and Madonna fans. It's also has a place in audiophiles hearts as it became a pivitol moment in pop music history.

Music Review: STREET SOUNDS OF THE 80'S
Rating: 5 Stars

This has to be the perfect example on how the street beats where handled back then, Madonna has always used in a good way the dance sounds, her debut album is a classic compilation of pure early 80's fresh sound beats, it's worth to listen, and so purely deserves a greater admiration than 1984's "Like A Virgin", just because it was more truer than anything in her sophomore album, "Lucky Star" simple video that captures everybody's attention, this is the first top ten for Madonna, "Borderline" a long lasting song, what a pleasure to listen to this ballad make a dance joint, "Burning Up" a little bit of new wave on it, this is a rocker, "I Know It" popish beat, with great results, "Holiday" should be consider Madonna's celebration joint, this is a total dance classic for all times, "Think Of Me" the most boring of all, but still worth the listen. "Physical Attraction" sexy, it gives us the idea where Madonna was leading!, "Everybody" the first single, #1 on the club charts! dance and sing get up and do your thing with this classical dance album!

Music Review: The Perfect Pop Album
Rating: 5 Stars

Sometimes less is more. That's true in the case of Madonna, when she released her debut album in 1983. Its simple declarations of love and heartache laid the foundation for a rich body of work that would exceed anyone's expectations. This is the way pop should sound like: carefully structured hooks, irresistible rhythyms, and a commanding prescense (we had no idea, did we?). While Like A Prayer is clearly her best work, Madonna is where the story begins. There is something stirring within the record, hidden in the triumphant "Holiday" or the down and dirty "Burning Up". The Madonna that would follow would become an idol, one that took risks, poured her guts out, and constantly tried to redefine her signature dance sound that starts at this point. Some of Madonna's catchiest numbers are here, and while its not the thought provoking confessions that would soon follow, its enough to shoot down the idea that pop is a throw away genre. Look at what Madonna has done for music and video and what she is working on as we sleep at night. Expect to hear more from her, and listen to chapter one of this intriguing saga.

Music Review: The One That Started it All...
Rating: 4 Stars

This is the debut album from a Bay City Italian-American singer named Madonna Ciccone. Her first single was an r&b disco number called "Holiday." It wasn't a huge hit, but it made an impact on the r&b and pop charts and put the soon-to-be Material Girl on the map. Like that single, the rest of the album is a solid collection of r&b grooves that still hold up well despite their 80s production. We all know the hits "Borderline" and "Lucky Star," but I think the best songs on "Madonna" are the perky "Burning Up," the catchy "Physical Attraction," and her underground club hit "Everybody." On the first listen, Madonna's debut may seem nondescript and bland, but, as with all good records, the grooves grow on you and make a lasting impression. It would pave the way for a tremendous career, which would cement Madonna's status as a venerable icon in pop culture. This record obviously isn't her best, but if you want to know Madonna's musical roots, you needn't look any further than here.

Music Review: Disco album no clue to what follows
Rating: 5 Stars

In the beginning, Madonna was a disco star, reflected in this fine album. It contains three major international hits - Holiday, Lucky star and Borderline - that helped to set Madonna on her way to superstardom.

Lucky star, a perky, upbeat song, opens this set and is followed by the mellower Borderline. However, by far the biggest hit here is Holiday, which was a UK top ten hit on three completely separate occasions, just missing the top spot on two of them, as well as being a major hit in many other countries. The last track, Everybody, was very popular in the discos, though (as far as I know) it was not released as a single. It would surely have been a big hit had it been released as a single back then. While the other tracks here lack the brilliance of those four, or of her later album tracks, this was a promising debut.

Madonna's subsequent albums often have a disco appeal but bring in many other influences. Although this is not an essential album to the casual fan, no committed Madonna fan should be without it.
