Music Review: The Breakthrough

Madonna miraculously ascended to the throne as Queen Of Pop with her very first album and shocked the world. It's hard to imagine now, but in 1983 many people thought that only people from certain groups, such as blacks or white Anglo-Saxon Protestants for example, were qualified to be Queen Of Pop. Yet a nervous world was witnessing its first Catholic Queen Of Pop, Madonna. There were many people who believed that a Catholic was unfit to serve as Queen Of Pop. That all Catholics were enthralled to their puppet master in Rome, The Pope. That they were intellectually ill-equipped for anything more than brutish manual labor and the hollow recreation of excessive devotion to the superstitious hocus-pocus of their beloved mother church. Italian-American Catholics in particular were regarded as drunks and loud pasta eaters who, given half the chance, would sooner spend their last dime on a pint of red wine from 7-11 than buy food for their drooling simpleton relatives and their innumerable brood of squalling infants -- each one an unwelcome addition to the Pope's legion of brainless drones. That was then. As Madonna released each brilliant single and video from her debut album, she proved that Catholics were not only acceptable but could lead us into new frontiers with energy, faith, devotion. Now, in 2010, only Arabs are held in the sort of contempt once reserved for Catholics. It may still be many years before the world has its first Arab Queen Of Pop, but I hope I am alive to see that day. As it turned out, Madonna was the perfect Queen for the times, and her debut stands as the best single-artist disco album ever. With this self-titled record, Madonna imbued her mission with a single-minded devotion to melding hot beats with the loftiest of ideals for the liberation of the world. Her heroic example and irreproachable standards still inspire us today.

Madonna became a star upon the release of this, her self-titled debut. But because her stardom was thanks largely to her videos, which found her dressed provocatively and rolling around on the floor, most folks were all too willing to look past the overall quality of the album itself. Even with its somewhat dated keyboard textures and mechanized drum sounds, the album holds up incredibly well. There's "Borderline," which exudes a certain naivet?, something rarely associated with Madonna; "Holiday," which is sweet and celebratory; and "Lucky Star" a dance-floor classic. Songs like "Everybody" and "Burning Up" split the difference between dance music and new wave, which was popular at the time. That latter tune, in fact, contains a line that could be seen as a ready indicator of all that was to follow in Madonna's storied career. "Unlike the others, I'll do anything," she sings.
