Music Review: The ultimate in trashy eighties pop

A monster smash when released, LIKE A VIRGIN shot straight to #1 on the Hot 200 and has been certified Platinum 10 times over in the US alone. It remains Madonna's best-selling studio album in the US to date. This is easily Madonna's most fondly-remembered recording, and, although it's not quite as consistent as her debut, LIKE A VIRGIN is the album that made her a icon. The title track is still Madonna's second biggest hit (#1 Pop, #29 Adult Contemporary, #1 Dance), and it's still a catchy kitsch classic. The second smash hit "Material Girl" (#2 Pop, #1 Dance) is a silly, but endearing stab at the nation's materialism, with Madonna's comically snippy vocals making the whole thing memorable. Unfortunately, the song branded her with a nickname she has yet to completely shake.
Even though it was a Top Five hit, no one really seems to remember "Angel" (#5 Pop, #5 Adult Contemporary, #1 Dance), the light-weight third hit. The massively popular non-single "Into The Groove" was placed on the B-side of "Angel," and sent sales of the single through the roof. Warner Brothers arguably made a mistake by not releasing "Groove" as the A-side of the single (it certainly would have hit #1, as it did in the U.K.), however, "Angel" is still a slinky, if slightly forgettable, pop nugget. The fourth and final single, the irresistible "Dress You Up" (#5 Pop, #3 Dance), was also an unstoppable smash, despite being inexplicably included on Tipper Gore's "Filthy Fifteen" list. I'm not sure what Mrs. Gore found so offensive in the rather innocent-minded lyrics, but the song has a killer hook that makes such discussions seem pointless.
Madonna was still co-writing heavily with Steve Bray at this point, and two of the album tracks they composed, "Over And Over" and "Stay," are actually stronger than the aforementioned "Angel" (which was also a Madonna-Bray composition). The jubilant "Over And Over" became a fan favorite over the years, and it plays like a warm-up to later Madonna-Bray masterpieces like 1985's "Into The Groove" or 1989's "Express Yourself." Madonna also sounds very impassioned on the closing "Stay," which is perhaps Madonna's best album track from this period. While these are the only true standouts that the albums offers, Nile Rodgers' slick production makes even the standard-issue filler ("Pretender," "Shoo-be-doo") sound well-crafted and enjoyable. The only real low point is her cover of Rolls Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore," which proves that Madonna had yet to perfect her craft of delivering ballads.
LAV is 100% pure fun, and even though she has done better work elsewhere, this is the record that the phenomenon known as Madonna will always be remembered for. As with her debut album, the majority of Madonna's vocals were mechanically altered to sound more high-pitched and girlish, which actually gives the material even more charm. I think the album would have been improved even further if it had been re-issued with her sountrack hits from `85 ("Crazy For You," the aforementioned "Into The Groove") as bonus tracks, but what's here is the ultimate in mid-eighties trashy synth pop. This album, more than any other, really captures the spirit of the pop scene of late `84, and it will always hold a special place in my heart for nostalgic reasons. It has that terrific cover photo too!
NOTE: In 1985, Madonna made a cameo appearance as a night club singer in the film Vision Quest, and sang two songs. One of which, "Crazy For You" (#1 Pop, #2 Adult Contemporary), became an enormous hit. The other VISION QUEST song, the driving up-tempo stomper "Gambler," is a fun dance track that is very much in the mold of her early hits. As of this writing, "Gambler" has yet to appear on any of Madonna's proper LPs. Also in 1985, Madonna made an impressive acting debut in the comedy DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, and contributed the song "Into The Groove" to the film's soundtrack. Co-written with Steve Bray, "Into The Groove" is the ultimate Madonna dance track. The song was a massive radio hit, but Sire/Warner didn't want to issue the song as a single (they were wanted to only push songs that were on the then-current LIKE A VIRGIN album), so the very popular "Into The Groove" was only available as the B-side of the "Angel" single. It was largely due to "Groove's" appeal that barely-remembered "Angel" leaped into the Top 5.
