Music Review: Madonna's best club track since "Music"

"Hung Up" marks a turning point in Madonna's career, being the first release with Stuart Price as producer. (Stuart Price was the musical director on her last two tours, and has remixed several artists including Gwen Stefani). "Hung Up" features a loop from the ABBA hit "Gimme Gimme Gimme" and marks only the second time that ABBA have granted permission for their music to be sampled. Despite the use of sampling, Madonna makes this track her own - into her most brilliant club and dance floor release since "Music" in 2000. Its also arguably her best pop release since then as well.
The song has gone to #1 worldwide - including most European countries, Australia, and Canada. More notable is where it hasn't gone to #1 - that being pretty much only in the U.S. where radio is saturated with too much R&B and hip-hop to give the song enough of a chance. However, "Hung Up" has gone to #1 on the iTunes chart in the U.S. and of course, the Billboard Dance/Club Chart.
A flashback to the early days of Madonna's career - the original of this track outshines the remixes like with may of her '80s releases. The SDP Extended Vocal and Extended Dub (tracks #2 and #6) are the best mixes on here because they are simply extended mixes that Stuart Price created from the original version of "Hung Up". Gives you a taste for the brilliance of the record - that it doesn't have to be remixed to make it good.
The next two mixes (tracks #3 and #4) are actually stand out club mixes without the ABBA sample.
The Tracy Young "Get Up And Dance Groove Edit" easily beats out Tracy's previous work for Madonna on "Music" and "Don't Tell Me". Overall, its fairly standard club fare with pounding synths and a tribal beat but catchy and original enough to fill the dance floor.
The Bill Hamel Mix (track #4) is probably the most original and strongest of all the remixes. It has a wicked baseline and really brings the vocals out to the forefront. Bill Hamel first made a name for himself with his amazing remix of Seal's "Get It Together", and his great work continues here.
The Chus & Ceballos mix (track #5) is basically a throwaway IMO. It overrides the vocals over a rather dull and uninspired drum loop. Quite disappointing.
Two other "official" mixes are also floating around. The L.E.X. and Eddie X mixes are both very, very good. However, you will have to acquire these through "other means". For some reason the record company declined to include either these or the full version of Tracy Young's mix on the single. My question is - what is the point in leaving them off when singles sell only 5000 copies anyway?
Don't forget to check out Madonna's new CD "Confessions On A Dancefloor" - her best CD since at least "Ray Of Light". Most of the CD is even better than "Hung Up".
