Music Review: I tried to like it.

I bought this album the same day that I bought Optimus Rhyme's eponymous release. I bought it first. I listened to it first. I thought I liked it. I listened to it more. I still thought I liked it.
The problem came when I started listening to Optimus, and subsequently found myself rediscovering some of the other hip-hop artists I've enjoyed in the past, from Mars ILL to Atmosphere, and I remembered that there's more to hip-hop than beats and loops and lyrics. It's real music. Unfortunately, Frontalot isn't real music. He's -- well, he's beats and loops and lyrics. I came to this realisation when I put in his CD (well, a burned copy of the CDs I downloaded) for a coworker, and desperately tried to find a song which summarised why I liked the album. I eventually settled on Message 419, but that didn't work out so well. I found out that there was not, in fact, a single song on the album which I really enjoyed.
Frontalot has quite a knack for thinking up clever lyrics, of course, but his flow is nigh nonexistent. He has a methodical, almost surgical precision to his words, and it robs them of any life. The musical backdrops are just as bad: They're the mindless loops of mainstream rap.
Put your wallet away for now, nerd. There's better hip-hop out there, and some of it even features giant robots. Nerdiness alone does not make good music; listen to Optimus Rhyme, listen to MC Chris, or, if you're in the mood for a bit more melody, go listen to JoCo.
