Music Review: Who is Mister Mystere?

"Mister Mystere" is a surprising departure from previous albums produced by -M-, aka Mathieu Chedid, a top of the pop charts rock performer in France. Don't worry if you aren't literate in French, because the album includes a DVD with subtitles so you can follow in English or Spanish. If you are already an -M- fan and love his incredible electric guitar magic, you'll love the new -M- in acoustic as well as plugged in. Just don't expect to see -M- in his outrageous costume and M-shaped hair. In his latest album, Mathieu Chedid has stepped out from behind that image to share his deepest thoughts and feelings, the things that drive him as a musician, and it is a sweet experience to listen to his story. In "Le Roi des Ombres" he admits that "Alone on the stage, I lost my way." In "Tanagra" he expresses the eroticism of love that drives one to self destruction, and in "Delivre" pleads for the healing that comes from heart-baring honesty in relationships, explaining that the intensity of love can leave one living "alone...on borrowed time." The video is exhilarating, a double screen interpretation of the songs. You have to view it over and over to savor the images and follow what is sheer poetry in the lyrics.
