Music Review: AFZ054 exceeded expectations

I have several of the Audio Fidelity releases and have been pleased with the sound quality so far, though the packaging leaves a little to be desired. For such a premium price, it would be nice to have the lift-lock jewel cases, but enough nit-picking.
I was hesitant to purchase this Audio Fidelity release due to the comments from the previous reviewers. After finding this item in a retail outlet a few months ago, I bit the bullet and bought the CD. It was a low-numbered release (#0673) so I do not believe anything was corrected that the previous reviewer discusses. I have read some negative reviews of Audio Fidelity's "Heartbeat City" and that compression was used on "The Pretenders" self-titled release (but it still sounds great to my ears, but I have nothing else to compare it to).
After playing the CD in my POS car stereo, I was immediately impressed with the sound quality. The detail was impressive. I cranked the volume and my ears did not hurt. I love that.
I did not hear any false start during "They Call Me the Breeze". I wonder if the reviewer who mentioned this false start may have ripped the CD to mp3 and then encountered the 'false start'?
If your intention is to buy these Audio Fidelity releases and then rip them to mp3 for playback and never listen to the CD on a home stereo (or car for that matter), then you should probably save your money and buy the standard CD release. Compressing these discs to mp3 format defeats the purpose of having a CD mastered with no compression (and paying the premium price).
This CD really shines on a player that supports the HDCD format. This is how you should hear the CD. I would imagine that this release rivals the MFSL release that now goes for no less than $55 used. Go buy yourself a cheap OPPO universal player, break out your favorite whiskey, and listen to some of the best music that Southern Rock has to offer.
