Music reviews of One More From the Road

Music Review: Nothing To Write Home About
Rating: 3 Stars

Forget Lynyrd Skynyrd, if you want an example of real down home southern musicianship, get a copy of `the Fillmore Concerts" by the Allman Brothers Band. Lynyrd Skynyrd has always been and will always be a watered down third rate group of Allman Brothers wannabees and this collection proves it. While the Brothers are secretly an awesome blues & jazz group masquerading as a rock band, Skynyrd is little better than a weak attempt to replicate the Allman Brother's magic.

Whereas the Brothers use the studio versions of their songs as little more than a reference point for the live versions, Skynyrd almost never varies from the studio version. The guitar playing lacks intensity as well as inspiration. The keyboards are a bit better than the guitar, but still nothing to write home about. The drumming and bass are so basic that they are barely worth noting.

If Skynyrd has anything going for them, it's the songwriting of Ronny Van Zant. Despite being saddled with a really crappy band that wouldn't know good slide guitar playing if it snuck up and beat them in the head, Ronny was able to write some really good lyrics. On the whole, most of his songs are honest, heartfelt and speak easily to most people.

But good lyrics alone do not a good band make, it also takes instrumental brilliance. And that is something Skynyrd never had and isn't likely to ever get. Pass on this one and get "the Fillmore Concerts" by the Allman Brothers instead.

Several Weeks Later:

WOW!!! Did I ever kick over a hornet's nest when I wrote this review. I expected to start some conversation, but I had no idea that people would respond with as much vehemence as they did. After having read some of the responses that others have posted here and stuffed into my email I now feel the need to clear some things up.

It's hard when you are trying to decide which CD's to purchase to get an objective view by only reading reviews posted by fans gushing over their pets. While good reviews are helpful, criticism also has it's place. I'm sorry if others find my comparison of Skynyrd and the Brothers to be unfair, but people seeking to find info on the product they are considering spending their money on have the right to hear from those who are less than impressed.

I'm sorry I didn't fall over myself for Skynyrd, but as a southerner, I am very proud of the accomplishments of southern musicians and composers, which I consider to be among the finest in the world. I wanted the shoppers here to know that if they are interested in exploring the music of this extremely influential region that there were better places to go than mullet rockers like Skynyrd.

I'm not insecure about the status of my favorite band, the ABB, instead I just think that buyers should explore what I consider to be a better use of their music buying dollar. Other "southern rock" live albums I would recommend before this one include,
North Mississippi Allstars: Hill Country Revue
Widespread Panic: Live In the Classic City
Derek Trucks Band: Live at the GA Theater
Black Crows & Jimmy Page

Dismissed by some as the redneck Led Zeppelin, yet beloved by a faithful and grassroots following for just that reason, Lynyrd Skynyrd sailed above it all--even the dark tragedy that befell them less than a year after this landmark live set was recorded in Atlanta. A triple-platinum perennial in its classic-rock heyday, this 25th anniversary edition has been digitally restored and authentically remixed on vintage '70s equipment to great effect. The band's performances have also been resequenced to their original running order to accurately recreate the Skynyrd '70s live experience.

Even Allen Collins's later-overdubbed intro to their ubiquitous epic "Free Bird" has been restored with the original. Cameron Crowe's original notes are also here, long before Almost Famous, and he insightfully puts the album in its proper historical perspective. But the real premium here is the almost full disc of bonus cuts, including previously unreleased versions of "Simple Man," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "Workin' for MCA," "I Ain't the One," "Searching," and other alternate versions recorded during the Atlanta stand ("Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," "Crossroads," "Free Bird"), but until now scattered elsewhere in the Skynyrd catalog. --Jerry McCulley
