Music Review: Smokin'!!!

I played it from the beginning, and the very first track "Workin'" just burst out at me with a thunderous assault of heavy guitar riffs, bass, and drums. I didn't expect them to sound so fresh and energized. Johnny Van Zant sound greater than I've ever heard him before: not only does he have that classic bloozy Van Zant voice but, with his previous background in heavy metal (remember his band Van Zant back in the early-mid '80's?), he sings with such force that it propels the band into something stronger than they've ever been before. "Workin'" is probably the hardest song that Lynyrd Skynyrd has ever done, and it's great!!

The other tracks in the first half of this CD are also excellent: "Full Moon Night" takes the tempo down a notch, but the band keeps their sound really tight through all the time changes that this song goes through. "Preacher Man" is a great I-ain't-perfect-and-I-don't-give-a-damn-bout-it song that features roaring vocals and a cool "na-NA-na-NA" chorus. "Tomorrow's Goodbye" is a serious ballad that reminds us that Skynyrd still has a soft side. The title song, "Edge of Forever" is an introspective song that also rocks hard.

Unfortunately, the CD does begin to wear on a little in the second half, as songs tend to sound a bit too similar to each other, and songs like "Gone Fishin'," "G.W.T.G.G.," and "Fla." are just not very memorable. However, this second half is at least partially redeemed by the muscular and intelligent "Rough Around the Edges" which shows us why Lynyrd Skynyrd should be doing more of this kind of stuff in the first place.

If they do another record, and I certainly hope they do, let's hope that Lynyrd Skynyrd make another powerful CD that is as strong as this one. Rock on, guys...hope to see ya's on stage again!! :)
