Music Review: One of the better modern Cast Recordings

I saw this show when it previewed in Boston, and I have to say, I was really bored until the end of the first act. The opening number looked like something out of a rehearsal, with the characters all out of costume. Apparently, there was a reworking of the costumes at some point, and perhaps this changed the way the opening number played out, but it just took me right out of the moment for a good portion of the show.
By the end of the first act, I was hooked by Horton, Jojo and Gertrude. Kevin Chamberlain (Horton) is no great singer, it's true, but with his expressions and mannerisms, he speaks directly to the child in all of us. If you want to enjoy this CD, you have to put the diva in you aside and listen with an open mind and heart. Anthony Blair Hall (Jojo) is charming and hits all the notes, but he doesn't really get to shine until he and Horton connect so solidly in "Alone in the Universe," which is easily one of the most lingering tunes you will hear from the Broadway stage. They connect again later in the show in the superlative ballad "Solla Sollew," which I can't really describe and you'll just have to listen to it yourself.
Another key moment for those of us who saw it in Boston was Janine LaManna's (Gertrude McFuzz) big song, "All For You." Yes, the song is campy and silly, but she delivers it with such heartfelt honesty that you just have to fall in love with her. The audience literally stood up and cheered. It was just that perfect. Unfortunately, the CD doesn't capture the magic of that moment, but it's a worthwhile remembrance of what it once was.
One glaring omission from this soundtrack is the entire "Lorax" sequence, which was played on stage to great effect, but was not actually a song and therefore was cut. Adding this back in to a "special edition" in the future might restore some of the edge that this CD otherwise lacks.

Other wonderful performances are turned in by Stuart Zagnit and Alice Playten (Mr. & Mrs. Mayor of Whoville), Eric Devine (General Genghis Kahn Schmitz), and Devin Richards as Judge Yertle the Turtle (a small but essential part towards the end of the show). Michele Pawk shines in her numbers as well (as well she should, given the character of Mayzie LaBird).
The show is not without its low points, however. David Shiner just doesn't have the charisma to carry the show as The Cat in the Hat. His voice is somewhat expressive and he isn't awful or anything, but he just doesn't... pardon the pun... shine. Sharon Wilkins (Sour Kangaroo) is a great performer, but the character is just annoying to listen to. I'd compare this to the part of Lucy in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. Appropriate, but annoying.
Overall, this CD is well worth owning. It is, like many say, better than the show itself, and the tunes are indeed rather infectious and you will probably find yourself playing this one over and over for a while. Yes, the music is somewhat inconsistent, but you know, this isn't Ragtime, now, is it. It's a fun show with fun songs; nothing amazing or transformative here.
