Music reviews of Smoke & Mirrors

Music Review: This may be better than the first (previously my favorite) Lynch Mob
Rating: 5 Stars

Honestly-If you were a fan of the very first Lynch Mob, buy 'Smoke and Mirrors' now.

First, it's amazing that this release actually happened. I remember long ago, waiting for the first Lynch Mob, and it was always delayed... I read about this one being recorded on [...], and I thought..... '..sure, another one of George's projects... '. George has had many projects. I bought them all, and was severely disappointed in nearly all of them. The original Lynch Mob has been my all-time favorite, no question.

'Smoke and Mirrors' floored me. What really is surprising to me is that I might be more impressed with Oni than I am with George, and that is saying something. Oni just flat-out rocks... he absolutely kills on this release, and I am just so happy that these guys got it together long enough to put this thing out. I can't say enough about Oni's vocals, he is amazing, and it made me believe that Oni is the real reason I liked the first Lynch Mob. I'm a guitar fan first, and tend not to pay too much attention to the vocals unless they are bad. Oni proves that the vocals defined the attitude of Lynch Mob, pretty much more than anything else, and the original band was stellar. Thank You Oni, you have really impressed the heck out of me, and probably many more. You bring an element of sophistication that is amazing, your lyrics tell a story like no other, and create magic. George's playing shines when it is paired with Oni's vocals, along with an absolutely thundering bass, very similar in impact to Anthony Esposito's thunder on the original. The drums are great on this one too, it's a super band, and it is what I hoped for, and more.

I agree 100% with the other reviews, especially the first review with a breakdown of the songs, and what they remind you of in terms of other music. Man, that reviewer nailed it. The Yngwie vibe of 'We Will Remain' is unmistakeable. Yngwie is who he is, but he does have a unique sound and song structure. George toured with Yngwie for a summer, can't remember when... but is sure seems that through all of the crap that George and the band put up with, he still was influenced enough to do a song that could have been written by Yngwie - honest. Listen to it, and you can't deny the vibe of that song. It just hammers, and is excellent.

I have been listening to this solid since it arrived. Every morning I wake up, one of these songs is stuck in my head. Overall, every song is excellent, and the songs are so varied it is wonderful.

If I was the manager for this band, I would cut a video for 'Smoke and Mirrors' (the song), put the band in cowboy hats, fill the video with country themes... pickup trucks, horses, set it in the wide-open west....and sell it to the CMT audience. A lot of hard rock fans have went over to country-rock, because metal went in a terrible direction (new-metal.... whatever the heck...can't listen to it), and the country guitar-themed music is basically rock-n-roll.
Lynch Mob could honestly cross over with both 'Smoke and Mirrors' and 'Lucky Man'. And I understand this sounds goofy, but think of the misplaced rock fans out there, who need some edge, but also need some good songs. Both of these songs have a strong country-rock vibe to me, and with good videos, I could see a bunch of fans for Lynch Mob... and it would rock, when George threw down one of his out-of-this-world solos, and put every other guitar player completely under a rock. The country fans would flip out. Not many people understand George's magic, and the signature George sound.... more people need to hear it.

I could go on and on about this, but I won't. Just BUY IT NOW. Buy a few copies, give them to friends. It is a fabulous release, and people need to hear it. There are several songs that have serious radio-play potential, especially 'Before I Close My Eyes'. Amazing. There are so many moments of absolute magic on this thing, places in the songs that just make me want to cry with happiness.... honestly..... moments like these aren't really planned out , they just happen and they sound wonderful. Things came to together in a big way on this release, and you need to hear it.
