Music Review: "Sit right down beside me, and make yourself at home.."

There are plenty of different flavors throughout, ranging from simple beauty ("If I Had a Boat") to a kind of slow bebop swing (the silly/heartfelt "Here I Am") to bouncy modern country ("I've Been to Memphis") to dance-in-the-aisles gospel ("Church"), but they all sound like they naturally belong together. Everything's filtered through that distinctively Lovett-ian prism - yes I know I'm stretching for a metaphor, but I don't get paid for this stuff - and his quirky humor gives everything enough charm to make it all his own.

"Closing Time" might seem a little cliched and ordinary, but most of the time everything's charming enough to draw me in. "Wild Women" gives the blues a delightfully down-and-dirty edge with a gritty cameo by Francine Reed. "She's No Lady" and "M-O-N-E-Y" are sly gender commentaries ten times as tasteful and humorous as that Zappa guy ever made it. "If I Had a Boat" is probably the main standout, a dreamy slice of whimsy that remains gorgeous despite (or maybe because of, depending on your taste) some smooth steel guitar. It's meant to be taken somewhat facetiously rather than seriously, but so is almost everything else. Lyle would seem like a harmless nut in "Penguins" or a woeful loner through "Nobody Knows Me" if they seemed too sincere.. not to mention the hopeless romantic of the unexpectedly sweet "You Can't Resist It." But this stuff is too light and fun to analyze any more.

I use to think of Lyle as just some typical country artist, but Live In Texas has more than proved me wrong. Give it a try and you just might discover the same.
