Music Review: GRITTY, SHOUTING VOICE SOMETIMES EQUALS A LESS PLEASANT LISTENING EXPERIENCE

And then there were the blues... I've been explorng blues music as of late by purchasing, listening to, and evaluating a number of blues cds. Now there is Luther Allison on Restless. Luther's songs on this cd certainly sound like they are definitely the blues. I enjoy the blues. In fact, that's the reason that I bought Restless, to explore and further appreciate the blues as sung by Luther Allison. I also bought Restless because the cd received outstanding reviews on the Amazon website. The first reviewer called Restless Luther's best work. I already know that Luther has a positive reputation among many members of the blues-loving community. Purchasing Restless seemed like a very rational and wise decision. Now I'm listening to Restless and I am finding out some new knowledge about Restless and Luther Allison. First off, Restless is definitely a blues classified cd. Every song on Restless is an example of the blues. Next, Luther has the necessary passion in his voice that is needed if the listener is to truly feel the blues that are being sung. Luther Allison also is certainly a very accomplished electric guitarist. Yet, if you "listen around" to many blues artists, you will find that there is a fairly large number of current blues artists who are very accomplished electric guitarists. So, although "very accomplished electric guitarist" is A very important quality in a electric blues cd, it is not a single, defining, and absolutely deciding reason to purchase Restless. Since Restless is also filled with blues vocals, the consumer should also have wise and informed knowledge of Luther Allison's vocal talents before purchasing this cd. Here's my impression. Luther Allison's voice sounds gritty and often sounds like he's shouting the song's words into the microphone. This griity, shouting quality in many of Luther's vocals is valued by some, but it is somewhat of a distraction and a disappointment to my ears. These ears have previously listened to a large number of vocalists that managed to caress and genuinely sing the words of a song. (One great example is Robert Cray.) This partial deficit of genuine vocal ability, as sometimes evident in Luther Allison's voice on Restless, is a far too common liability among blues and rock blues artists. Listen to Joe Bonamassa's voice on Blues Deluxe and you will hear the genuine blues vocal ability and caressing of the words that I am talking about. So what overall rating should I give Restless? The final, and perhaps the most important, factor in my personal rating is that I just don't seem to enjoy and appreciate Restless all that much. My rating is going to be three stars: a satisfactory rating. Restless is filled with satisfactory vocals and electric blues music. Should you purchase Restless? Sorry, no recommendation either way from me. I leave that decision entirely up to you. Musical tastes are personal and somewhat unique to each listener. My parting question is: Why buy Restless when there are many better blues cds available?
