Music reviews of Lupe Fiasco's the Cool

Music Review: A True 5 Star Album...Classic
Rating: 5 Stars

Lupe has established himself as being one of the premiere hip-hop artists in today's game. In fact, music in general...

I do realize that the term "classic" has been thrown around the music industry for as long as it has been formed. And only a third of all "classic" album really do live up to the term. Lupe Fiasco's "The Cool" deserves the tag and the proof is undeniable when listening to just a few of the many outstanding songs he offers on his sophomore album.

First of all, Lupe Fiasco is not like any other MC out as of right now...this second. I call his style "Grown Man Hip-Hop." He's the President, yet, I have a feeling many more MCs will come out of the darkness thanks to Lupe's brave trend setting. His skills as an MC is just the icing on the cake. His wordplay and lyrics are the frosting, and his song structure and themes are the fluffy cake mix. Some of these songs are absolutly amazing. There are certain songs that will give the listener goose bumps on the back of their necks. That's the best feeling...its almost like a drug. When purchasing new music that feeling is what I want but hardly ever get. "The Cool" gives me that feeling everytime I listen to it.

The album starts off with a couple of interluds. The first song is the introductery to the album. It brings the tone that will reside throughout the entire effort. The second song is an ode to a friend of Lupe's named Chilly. It is only a minute long and is not neccessarily a track to skip, but it meant more for a tribute to his friend than entertainment.

The third song is called "Go Go Gatchet Flow" (4/5). Yes, the title of the song leaves for small expectations and even I was scared that he was going to have an entire song dedicated to Inspector Gadget, but surprisingly, despite the chorus, the song is very good. The beat is nice and goes very well with Lupe's speedy lyrics. It's a great song to start off because it shows a flow Lupe hardly shows within his intelectual songs. His flow is amazing. Not a lot of rappers these days can go as hard as Lupe does. And like I said, the chorus, "I got my go, go, go, go, go gadget flow" isn't exactly "cool," but I see what he was trying to get across with the song.

The fourth song is called "The Coolest," (4/5), which is a sequal of sorts from his debut album Food & Liquor's song called "The Cool," which was produced by Kanye West. This song is great. It holds a great soulfoul beat which reminds me of the large portion of Food & Liquor. Lupe's lyrics is what grabs the listener. Very refreshing from what is playing on the radio these days.

The fifth song is the first single from the album. It's an outstanding song called "Superstar" (5/5). The song features Matthew Santos, who is fast becoming a hitmaker feature. He and Lupe have history. Santos is featured on Lupe's Food & Liquor as well. Their two vocals together create magic. "Superstar" is a little different from the rest of the ablum in that it seems like it could be a single and sell units from the strength of the single alone. For the rest of the album, Lupe's album is flooded with amazing songs, but songs that would not make it on TRL. "Superstar" brings a fresh hip-hop song with a great chorus. Lupe speaks on his star status and explains how a superstar needs to harness their stardom to remain grounded and sane. Lupe holds himself well.

The sixth song is called "Paris, Tokyo." (4/5). This song is another great one. It's fitting that it follows "Superstar" because the song explains how much traveling around the world allows us humans to live a better life. Grabbing different influences from different cultures. The only thing that I think lacks in this song, is the beat. But for the most part it is a great song.

The seventh track is called, "Hi-Definiton" (3/5). This song is the only one that I feel could have been left off the album. It was very surprising to see the only featured star rapper being Snoop Dogg, of all people, I love Snoop Dogg, however, with this album being all the same tone, a song with Snoop Dogg could have been replaced with a track with Talib Kweli or Common. I just did not feel this song at all. It is listenable though, and not a song to skip right off the bat. Many will like the song, however, I didn't.

The eighth song is called "Gold Watch" (4/5). It's another great song explaining the fortunes of stardom. Lupe does not present himself any different from when he was an up and coming artist. He does not wear chains of gold or put spinners on his cars. You will not see him on MTV Cribs. There is a place for that in the hip-hop culture, but Lupe decided to rise above it and create music that is entertaining without giving the listener what everyone else is giving them. "God Watch" is a solid song.

The ninth song is called "Hip-Hop Saved My Life" (5/5). This is the first song that really gave me that intense goose bump feeling on the back of my neck. It's as great of a song as any written to be an ode to hip-hop. His lyrics and the tone of the song is perfect. It really shows Lupe's passion for what he is doing. And with passion brings classic material. This is a classic song. I absolutly love it. This song sparks consecuative songs that are simply amazing.

The tenth track, "Intruder Alert" (5/5). This could be the best song on the album. The passion Lupe displays reminds me of 2Pac when he wrote "Brenda's Got a Baby" or anything from "Me Against the World." The pure passion is so evident. And the soulfoul sound and vocals bring a lot to the song. These songs are tracks to LISTEN to, not just play as background music or club bangers. If you listen to you're music and not just play it, this song will give you goosebumps too.

"Streets On Fire" (5/5) is the eleventh song. The song also features Matthew Santos. This is an amazing song as well. Lupe shows off his fast flow once again while at the same time bringing relevant lyrics to an important song. The song is a faster song than the majority of the others on the album and is a great addition. This is hip-hop people, LOVE IT.

Track number twelve is called "Little Weapon" (5/5). The beginning of the song is a chopped up version of a mixtape song Lupe did for called "Kids with Guns" which was freestyled ontop of the Gorillaz "Kids with Guns" instrumental. The freestyle was amazing and so is this song. The lyrics grabbed me the most. The song explains how guns are percieved by our society. The violent games we play and the movies we view bring all of us to a sense of guns being inferior to our conscience. I love this song. The rapper that is featured on the end of the track is my favorite, only because it goes off very cleverly about violent online War games (Call of Duty 4 or Rainbow Six Vegas). Although, I own each of those games, I can see what he is trying to get across. The song is not "anti-guns," it only explains the situation our society is in. This is another classic song.

Song thirteen is called "Got to Eat" (5/5). This is another true hip-hop song. The beat feels as if it has a little country flare to it. Lupe once again gives us the percpective of our society. When us humans are going hungry, we get desperate and will do anything to get it. It's true. It is human nature to survive. This beat along with Lupe's flow is very good.

The fourteenth song is called, "Dumb It Down" (5/5). This song is a direct stab against all of the fans out there that say Lupe's style is too sophisticated to be mainstream hip-hop. Which might be true, but sadly. Lupe saves his most wordplay for this song. He lyrically kills it! Amazing! This song at first gives off a mixtape feel, but it's great. One of Lupe's classic songs. He plays off the fans that don't understand him and the record execs who said he needs to change up his style.

The fifteenth song is called, "Hello/Goodbye (Uncool" (5/5). This song is one of the most insightful songs offered from Lupe. It feels very soulfoul and passionate. Another song to LISTEN to and let sink in. Lupe has a knack for creating intense songs that take you for a ride throughout the entire track. This song is a perfect example. He flow is very fast, but comprehensable. Great song.

Song sixteen is called, "Die" (4/5). Lupe displays another track that he spits very fast, but with purpose. The song is very, very great. He and the featured rapper sound like Twista spitting as fast as they do. However, the song lacks the passion that floods the rest of the album. Lupe's flow is amazing though and makes the song a 4/5 but could be a 5/5 to some listeners. Not many fans know that the dude can rap like that.

The seventeenth track is called, "Put You On Game" (4/5). This song is very, very interesting. Lupe writes his lyrics with a purpose. He displays another great insightful songs. He speaks in first person and represents society to the fullest. Almost as if he is speaking from the Devil's mouth. Although the song is a little short, it has a lasting appeal that will have you playing more than once in a row.

"Fighters" (5/5. Hands down my favorite song from the album. This song represents hip-hop to its truest form. Grab a beat, get a dude to sing the chorus, and spit over it with feeling and passion. This song has a surreal feel to it. Almost futuristic of sorts. Matthew Santos is featured and displays his one of a kind of voice to perfection. It's one of the most personal songs Lupe dispays on the album. The first time I heard it I was completly overwhelmed with just how great of a song it is. I love songs that are stripped down with not a lot of production, just lyrics and a great chorus. An amazing song. With "Fighters" and "Intruder Alert" alone, the album should be considered one of the best albums of the year, however, with all of the 5/5 songs that I have described, it should remain a classic of all-time.

The last song on the album, which is called "Go Baby" (4/5). This song is directed more towards the ladies than the majority of the songs, actually, more than any song on the album. It's a feel good track that reminds me of something Kanye would bite from Lupe. I love Kanye, but I feel a lot of his influence comes from Lupe.

There you have it. A CLASSIC album. Please purchase this album and keep this music industry alive. It is worth it, trust me. Not a lot of albums are worth the money, but everyone of these songs on this album is listenable. No fillers whatsoever. Enough said!

Description of Lupe Fiasco's the Cool

Genre: Rap, Hip-Hop
Media Format: Compact Disk
Rating: PA
Release Date: 18-DEC-2007
The name of Lupe Fiasco's sophomore set sounds like a Kanye-ism, and that's fitting: The Cool spills over with Mr. West-style urgency, and it's just about as smart as anything Fiasco's more flamboyant mentor has issued. It could even land Lupe a little too close to the top of the hip-hop heap for Kanye's comfort. The Cool is cool not only for its sober, clear-headed vibe -- Fiasco ponders everything from the apocalypse to poverty to the weight of worldly possessions in these songs, some of them produced with a level of sensitivity uncommon among studio tracks by Soundtrakk -- but also for its potential. Songs like "Dumb It Down," about the music industry's insistence on the same old sorry themes, burn with relatability and realness. But others go deeper. "Little Weapon," produced by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, and "Intruder Alert" shape-shift customary hip-hop dialogue to let the issues of the day come sharply into focus. They make you think. Overall, The Cool is fevered, fierce, and at times furious, but so is Lupe Fiasco, and the album easily earns its spot as one of the top 10 CDs of 2007. --Tammy La Gorce
