Music reviews of Lupe Fiasco's Food & LiquorMusic Review: And the Grammy for Rap Album of the Year Goes to....... Rating: 5 Stars
Lupe Fiasco attempts to do what not many do and successfully accomplish it...Go against the typical sound of what is today known as "HIP HOP/RAP" music and still be credible and mainstream...An extremely well crafted album which sees Lupe talk about everything from skateboarding to love and terrorism...
Arguably the best debut since "College Dropout," Lupe, a devout Muslim, who practices the Islamic Religion,(No smoking, drugs, alcohol, and very little cursing) stays away from the typical topics of the current rap-abouts like guns, cars, money, and partying, as he even pokes fun at these themes in songs like Daydream and Hurt Me Soul...
Laced by great but not overwhelming over the top production as is the case with Kanye in some instances, he is assisted behind the boards by producers such as Kanye West(The Cool), Pharrell(I Gotcha), and Mike Shinoda(The Instrumental)...Also some local and in-house producers including Prolyfic, Soundtrack, and Needlz provide for about 2/3 of the albums production...
Intro -
Begins with a women talking about the streets of Chicago and gives you the feel as if you are standing in front of a Food and Liqour store as there is people in the background speaking the words of the street...This is followed by Lupe speaking in a foreign tounge and a dedication to his grandmother as a lush string arrangment quickly accompanies him...He gives you the introduction on his philosophies as well as intoduces his album and then the fun begins...
Real - 5/5 stars (Produced by Prolyfic)
A strong opener as it defintly catches your attention with its big sound and catchy hook...Basically saying that he is giving you the "Real" that is missing from the game today...A good start...
Just Might Be OK - 5/5 stars (Prolyfic)
Another big sound but a little repetitive from the previous track as it is by the same producer...Not one of Lupe's strongest lyrically but another good song...
Kick Push - 5/5 stars (Soundtrack)
Lupe's first single released off the album is a very creative and different sounding record...A mix of a skateboarding and love song as the main theme is a boy meeting a girl and together they "Kick,Push,Coast" through the city trying to find a place to board...Good production and nice lyricism, definitly gets the CD going in the right direction...
I Gotcha - 5/5 stars (Pharrell)
Lupe's second single recently released in August, is a more upbeat fun song which comes at a good time as the previous and next several songs are more serious and well, at times dark...Definitly a light, catchy hook, but still creative track...
The Instrumental - 5/5 stars (Mike Shinoda)
One of the most creative songs lyrically i have heard in some time...It tells a story without telling you what the story is based off as he keeps refering the the box(television) which makes you think what he is refering to like a puzzle...A harder, more rock sounding track produced by the Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda...
He Say She Say - 5/5 stars (Soundtrack)
Another nice produced track by Soundtrack, very melodic with lush instrumentation, Lupe gives a story about a boy without a father from two different perspectives...The first from the mother to the father and the second from the child to his father...Another very creative song which makes you think a few times to understand the meaning...
Sunshine - 5/5 stars (Soundtrack)
Lupe jumps into the love theme briefly in "Sunshine," where he speaks about meeting a girl and the feelings that come along with a new relationship...A different more refreshing approach to the topic rather than degrading and using obsene gestures as is the case in many urban sex appeal records, Lupe talks about real love and the emotions of the relationship...Also a very catchy and soulful chorus that you will find to be singing over and over...
Daydreamin' - 6/5 stars (Craig Kallman) ft. Jill Scott
AUSOMEE SONG!!!!! Lupe's second single released in the UK, featuring the talented and very beautiful Jill Scott, Lupe displays one of his most introspective and best songs on the album...While at first listens Daydreamin' seems to be a happy, cool, and calm song as the production is very European sounding, almost trip-hop using a sample from I Monsters "Daydream in Blue," turns out to be a mockery of hip hop music videos and male dominant culture, especially in the first 16 lines of the second verse...He is listing off all of the glorified images that rappers use in thier music videos and lifestyle to make them look like they are living the dream life but if you really think about all the things he says you see just how ridiculous the whole imagery has gotten...Come on everybody lets make cocain cool/We need a few more half naked women up in the pool/...And where's the champainge/We need champainge/Now look as hard as you can/With this blunt in your hand/And now hold up your chain/Slow motion through the flame/....A song that really makes you think about things, with a beautiful 1:30 ending of Jill Scott on top of the sample singing her butt off...One of the best songs of the year!!!
The Cool - 6/5 stars (Kanye West)
THE BEST PRODUCTION ON THE ALBUM layed by none other than Mr. Kanye West, as well as the best story written by Lupe...It has another European and futuristic sound to it using a sample of "Life on Mars" by Dexter Wenzel,(maybe a taste to come from the new Kanye album "Graduation" coming Spring '07)...It is a song about a gangster that was killed and comes back to life to relive his life from a outside perspective and see his actions and the consequences...Great descriptions used to really paint a picture and give you chills...Floatin down by his feet/Was the letter from his sister/Second grade handwritin/Simply read i miss ya/ Also a very deep chorus to make you think about your actions and the consequences that come about by mis-doings and some built in advice to not always chase to be "Cool" and just be yourself and live your life to the fullest...This life goes passin you by/It might go fast if you lie/You only live then you die/If life goes passin you by/Dont cry/If your breakin the rules/Making your moves/Paying your dues/Chasin the cool/...Another one of the best of '06!!!!
Hurt Me Soul - 5/5 stars (Needlz)
Another very nice record with lush instrumentaion and a deep message by Lupe...Basically it talks about more wrong doings and the bad message that most hip hop music gives...I use to hate hip hip/cause the women degraded/...It also digs into his other pains in the world such as...Took me off they Welfare/Cant afford they healthcare/My teacher wont teach me/My master beats me/I cant stop eatin/My best friends leavin/My pastor touched me/And it hurts me soul...Another great introspective cut to listen to and try and learn something from it...REAL HIP HOP!!!!
Pressure - 4/5 stars (Prolyfic) ft. Jay-Z
Actually one of the weaker songs on the album even though it features the so called "Best rapper alive"...Decent but not spectacular production and no real meaning to the song...And Jay's verse is sub-par...
American Terrorist - 5/5 stars (Prolyfic)
A very unique sound touching into an African/Indian vibe as Lupe gives his opinions regarding what "True terrorists" are...I would really hope this record is either released as a single or atleast performed several times by Lu to get the song out there because it is a very controversial song which would have alot of people listening hopefully including some "important, and infuential" people...It is basically showing how certain American ways and customs regarding racial people could be considered a terrorist act...Without saying it directly that American's are terrorists, he does it in a rather suggestive and comprehensive way again making you think about certain things...Dont give the black man food/Give red man liqour/Red man food/Black man nigga/Give yellow man tool/Make him railroad builda/Also give him pan/Make him go pull gold from riva/Give black man crack blackin things/Give red man craps slot machines/....
The Emperor's Soundtrack - 4/5 stars (Soundtrack)
One of the weaker songs on the album...A good beat but nothing special with not much of a theme or point to the song...Not very catchy and probably just a track to skip over after a couple listens...
Kick Push II - 4/5 stars (Brandon Howard)
Again another song which could have probably been left off the album...It definitly hurts the end of the album as there is so much momentum though the first 13 tracks of the album and then it nearly falls apart...Just a continuation from the original Kick Push...
Outro
Takes the same beat from the intro while Lupe says his thank you's and goodbyes...He shouts out nearly anyone and everyone associated with the album...Cool but a bit too long as the track carries over 9 minutes long...
Overall the most complete, steady, and intriguing album of 2006...A music fan's delight especially a hip hop fans delight...Sighting Jay-Z's statement "A breath of fresh air," definitly a front runner for Album of the year!!!!!!!! Peace and Love FNF

Description of Lupe Fiasco's Food & LiquorWith Food & Liquor, Lupe Fiasco sets no boundaries for himself as he creates a revolutionary brand of alternative hip-hop in which he shares his mind through original storytelling techniques. He takes hip-hop off the streets and onto the half pipe, off the streets and into the sneaker shops, off the streets and into the hands and in front of real people. Let's see...a rap artist is hyped insufferably, his music is leaked incessantly, his album is delayed indefinitely, the hype grows, rinse, repeat. Welcome to the world of pop music in 2006, when "unauthorized" Internet seepage can somehow manage to simultaneously make and break an aspiring young performer. Lupe Fiasco's unfinished debut CD was slathered all over the Web for months, like some sort of Lonelygirl15, before finally seeing the legitimate light of day. That said, the Chicago-bred rapper, who rose to prominence thanks to his "Touch the Sky" collab with Kanye West, is hardly a slouch. His skittering, low-key rapping style is truly distinctive, and his lyrics are mostly thoughtful and creative without being heavy-handed. Despite frequent comparisons to "thinking man's rappers" from Tribe and De La Soul to Nas, the most apt comparison might be to Kanye West himself: Like West, Fiasco rises above the trappings of the street without sounding condescending or out of touch, and his sound has the same "timeless" quality--partly old-school, partly of the moment. Yet somehow, Food & Liquor isn't quite a home run either; it lacks fire and it cries out for an infectious track or two that really sticks. Still, Lupe distinguishes himself as an artist to watch. --Marc Greilsamer
