Music Review: An Exposure CD

First, let us remember that this album is to introduce Mexican music to the world. It is also a tribute to Mexican music. It looks like Luis Miguel is heavily influenced by Javier Solis.
Before analyzing the cd I would like to recommend it to those who are not familiar with Mexican music. Does Luis Miguel forget that hispanics know almost every song by heart and is the standard mariachi repertoire? Unless your budget permits you, save your money. Excellent vocals but were missing something. Mariachi arrangements were some of the best in the genre. Comparing it to , say, Alejandro Fernandez-AF-, this album is more mariachi than the latter. AF is more of a pop mariachi and arrangements are too pop that they even limit the trumpet sound unlike this one which is MORE mariachi. However this cd brings nothing new to the mariachi genre except exposure: thus 3 stars.
Luis Miguel had the right mariachi and wrong arranger: Armando Manzanero. He should have gotten Ruben Fuentes or even the great Maguellanes. Vargas is an excellent mariachi but it needs an excellent arranger. He used Vargas arranger as well but still could have gotten a better one.
El Viajero- I have not heard the original. This song has good lyrics and good arrangements. Supposedly Armando Manzanero heard this song in a contest. Its author wrote it as a homage to Pope JOhn Paul II's piligrimage to Mexico. The original song, as one reviewer notes below, can be found in a link noted below.
Entrega Total- Javier Solis made this song famous. The original has an organillero arrangement and offered more to mariachi arrangements than what this cd being reviewed did.
Echame a mi la culpa - A Javier Solis hit. The one on this cd sounds 'nicer'. Javier SOlis sounded like he lived it. The one on this cd is for the commercial world.
Mexico en la piel- very pretty. however, comparing it to the original arrangements, again, the original has more to offer.
Cruz de Olvido- Another classic ranchera. Nothing new to offer. good vocals. good arrangements.
De Que manera te olvido- again, another classic. Made famous by Vicente Fernandez. good vocals. VF sounds much rawer and with more feel. This song is mostly exposure.
Luz de Luna- beautiful song made famous by Javier Solis. This version sounds prettier than the original.
Motivos- This song was made famous by some trio. However, Vicente Fernandez resurected it. This version is the best outthere and could have reached excellence if it included a trio chorus as in VF's version. LM dedicated this song to his mom.According to him, it was his mom's favorite.
Cielo Rojo- another classic. I was waiting for a falsetto. The vocals were great but it did not shine. Again, ranchera commercilized.
Paloma Querida-of course, JAM classic. JAM wrote this song for one of his wives. Paloma QUerida was a Jorge Negrete Classic. I love the Negrete version better. However this one is pretty.
Que seas Feliz- this one was another Javier Solis hit. compared to JS version, this one is just missing the women chorus. Again, LM is not doing anything to mariachi music. In terms of voice it is good. However, the older JS brought more to the mariachi world.Written by the author of besame mucho.
Un Mundo Raro- JAM classic who himself made it a hit. made more famous by Vicente Fernandez.
Sabes una Cosa- Another Javier Solis classic.
I've noticed that most of LM's mariachi songs are from Javier Solis hit interpretations ( Y?, La media vuelta, amaneci en tus brazos). Either way this cd is a well done cd. however, it did not contribute nothing to mariachi in terms of music. It 's purpose though is more of a hommage and exposure of Mexican music ( hence the Mexican flag in the cd) Enjoy .
