Music Review: A good program -- warm up with the Spring, get lost in the Kreutzer

This is a great pairing of Beethoven sonatas, in wonderful, passionate perfomances by Russian violinist Maxim Vengerov, with Itamar Golan on piano for the Spring sonata and Alexander Markovich on the Kreutzer. Both sonatas were recorded in Berlin -- the Spring in 1992 and the Kreutzer in 1991. The sound quality is terrific.

The Spring Sonata, Beethoven's 5th violin sonata, is a good way to start the album -- a familiar crowd pleaser, with a first movement that is one of those classical "greatest hits" known and loved by all. Perfect to warm up the audience.

Sonata No. 9, the Kreutzer, comes in like a whirlwind after the soothing 5th. Beethoven originally dedicated the work to George Bridgetower, the violinist who played its premier, but the two had a falling out after the performance. So Beethoven switched the dedication to Rodolphe Kreutzer, one of the top violinists of the day -- but Kreutzer considered the piece unplayable, and never performed it.

Where the Spring is beautiful, the Kreutzer is ambitious -- long and difficult, it actually expanded the scope and reach of the violin sonata as a musical form. Beethoven's sketchbook said the style for the piece is "like a concerto", and indeed one gets the feeling that the piano part could, with some considerable difficulty, be orchestrated to turn the whole thing into a concerto. (Hasn't anyone done this? I'd love to hear it, anyway.)

This is a fantastic CD, with great music at an attractive price. Highly recommended!
