Music Review: Incredible artistry and ensemble!!

I am utterly baffled by Scott Peterman's review of this excellent set. After reading it, I went to my record collection and took out the LP set of these recordings, not ever having listened to them (the LPs are my wife's and I had been perfectly happy to stick with my Perlman and Zuckerman recordings). While I would not part with either, Menuhin and Kempff are clearly their equals and bring insights and beauties to these works that I had not heard before. Menuhin plays with his usually sweet sound and sense of tenderness, but can play with the proper amount of gusto when the music requires it. Listening to Kempff's playing here has been nothing short of a revelation for me (never having heard him before). He likewise has a very wide dynamic, tonal, and emotional range and is able to play with great clarity under some incredibly quiet pianissimo passages performed by Menuhin. Throughout the recordings, they play with a sense of ensemble that is beyond extraordinary. Note for example the opening of the Spring sonata where they weave an almost magical liquid texture while still maintaining a good sense of line. Like true chamber musicians, they are willing to get out of the way if the other performer has the important part. They are also able to play off each other to bring out humorous aspects of the music - as at the end of the closing of the first movement of Opus 12 #2.

As an experienced professional chamber musician, I think that this set is a model of how chamber music should be played. In short, I highly recommend it!!
