Music reviews of Beethoven: The 9 Symphonies [Box Set]Music Review: Karajan in London Rating: 4 Stars
Karajan and the Philharmonia worked very well together during the fifties and EMI present this Beethoven set from that era very nicely. In terms of artistry and musical quality these are top records if not the best from the period.
Performance: 5/5
During this period, the Philharmonia was one of the world's great orchestras. It is a shame it has never again achieved the dizzying heights of the 50s. Just consider the talent that went into shaping a leading it at this time - Furtwängler, Klemperer, Toscanini and, of course, Karajan. Just listen to those strings. Karajan induced some of the best playing from the string section. It's quite demonstrable and understandable here. Of course, the winds benefit from Klemperer's concentration in this area while the brasses boast some of the greatest players of their time. All these combine to produce memorable performances of great symphonies. The playing is energised and beautiful, precise and deeply felt. It is all carefully attended by a conductor growing in confidence and stature.
Sound: 4/5
There is much better mono sound around, particularly from this period but it has to be said this is quite bearable. I am generally put off by mono records despite my admiration for Furtwangler, Toscanini, Klemperer etc. The sound here did the job nicely, rendering the luminosity of the Philharmonia quite beautifully. Certainly, better 50s mono sound can be found but I'm sure if it got me to more greatly appreciate the wonders offered among mono records then others shouldn't find it prohibitive either. Here, I simply refuse to bandwagon with the other reviewers. Perhaps I've just lost my marbles!
If better sound is ever provided for this set, I would like to know about it.
Interpretation: 4/5
Differences between the readings in this set and later sets are subtle but telling. Fundamentally, there is little obvious change, but the overall nuance and `flavouring' of the cycles vary. Here we have Karajan's Beethoven going through something of a transition and there is something of an unsettled feeling to some of the works here, particularly noticeable in the 9th. During the 40s, when Karajan recorded Beethoven, he depended much more on German tradition than he did in the 50s and later. There was less personality about those despite a showy flare in the 5th, 7th and 9th. The recording of the 9th for EMI in 1949 was a minor turning point in Karajan's view of Beethoven. Gone were 90% of the small hints of Furtwängler and Böhm. These 50s interpretations are still eminently satisfying, however.
If you can stomach inferior mono sound, this is a worthwhile investment. Along with near contemporaneous recordings by Klemperer, Toscanini and Furtwängler, this Beethoven set is one of the greats.
