Music Review: Beethoven's Opus 29 Quintet -- and More

Even with a composer of Beethoven's stature, it remains possible to discover lesser-known masterworks. I find the discovery of such works a chief joy of listening to recordings. Beethoven's string quintet in C major, opus 29. is rarely performed and seldom recorded. Yet, it is delightful Beethoven, with a simplicity, polish and seeming effortlessness that he rarely achieved elsewhere. i was led to the work by Maynard Solomon's biography of Beethoven which praised it highly. I read Solomon several years ago but am only now getting to the string quintet in this excellent recording by the Zurich String Quintet on Brilliant. This bargain-priced CD also includes Beethoven's other efforts with the string quintet, but it is worth having for the opus 29 alone.
The opus 29 string quintet is Beethoven's only original effort in the form as the opus 4 and opus 104 quintets, also included on this CD, are arrangements of works originally composed for other instruments. The C major quintet was composed in 1801 and, as are Mozart's quintets, is scored for two violins, two violas, and cello. The work is radiant, confident,and cheerful. It flows lyrically and looks back in its serenity to the works of Haydn. The quintet reminded me of Beethoven's opus 22 piano sonata, also too little appreciated nowadays, in its confidence and in the feeling of summation of an earlier musical style that it inspires. The first violin plays a preeminent, soaring role in Beethoven's quintet.
The lengthy opening allegro sets the tone of the work with its sense of ease and with the glowing lyricism of its two themes. The movement has a tinge of melancholy in places. The slow movement also is highly melodic with a flowing theme played over a variety of plucked strings. The flow of the movement is twice interrupted by minor key outbursts. The scherzo contrasts a foot-stomping theme with a highly lyrical trio. The finale opens with a dramatic tremelo, followed by a turning melody which rises to the upper range of the violin's register. There is also an extended fugal passage for the five instruments at the close. This quintet, hidden in Beethoven's output, is a gem.
Beethoven's string quintet in C minor opus 104 is an arrangement of Beethoven's great early piano trio in C minor, opus 1 no. 3. The initial arrangement was prepared by another hand, but Beethoven modified it and, as he stated, raised it "from the most abject misery to some degree of respectability." The quintet is no substitute for the original trio, but it does capture something of the power of early Beethoven in his characteristic key of C minor. The finale is particularly effective in this recording.
The string quintet in E-flat major, opus 4 is an arrangement of an early wind octet, which Beethoven composed before moving to Vienna, and which was later published as opus 103. This work is a divertimento, with expansive, meandering themes, meant for relaxed listening, as are Mozart's works in the form. The graceful second movement is particularly enjoyable. There are two similar early works without opus numbers also included on this CD, in the form of landler, for a variety of combinations of string instruments.
The final work on this CD is the fugue for string quintet, opus 137 which Beethoven composed in 1817. This brief work of less than two minutes was the only major composition Beethoven completed in that year, and it is also the only late work Beethoven composed for string quintet. In its difficulty and intensity, this seldom-performed short fugue presages Beethoven's late string quartets and piano sonatas.
