Music Review: An interesting arrangement of the Beethoven Violin Concerto

The Beethoven Violin Concerto is a truly superb work. In my opinion, it is the best violin concerto ever written. If you are expecting something that special in the piano arrangement, you may be disappointed and wish I had given this fewer stars.
On the other hand, Pietro Spada performs splendidly here, as does the Philharmonia Orchestra (and the London Voices in the Choral Fantasy) under the direction of Sir Alexander Gibson.
The main piece on this disc is the arrangement of the Violin concerto. I always found it interesting, given that I play the piano but not the violin. On the other hand, I think that even the arrangement for clarinet and orchestra is better (perhaps because I play the clarinet as well). This concerto just does not seem quite right for the piano.
As a matter of fact, the piece is sufficiently unassuming so that some folks have wondered who really wrote it. Most people do ascribe it to Beethoven and just about everyone agrees that the cadenzas are almost surely Beethoven's. But others wonder if Clementi or some lesser person at the publishing house filled in some of the rest of the piece!
I was especially intrigued by the cadenza that included the tympany along with the piano. That's a really unusual thing to do. When the tympany is used in the opening of the concerto, it just seems like another instrument, and the fact that it is a drum does not make the music seem particularly martial to me. But part of that cadenza sounds quite martial, and it gives the whole piece a somewhat different color.
I like the fact that the disc includes the rarely played Rondo in B flat for piano and orchestra as well as a fine performance of the Choral Fantasy. That's 79 minutes of fine music that I recommend to all lovers of Beethoven.
