Music reviews of Beethoven: Complete Music for Cello & Piano

Music Review: Standard Recordings
Rating: 5 Stars

Many people may find cello sonatas a great way to fall asleep but the five sonatas of Beethoven are vibrant and exciting chamber works. Beethoven composed his first two Cello Sonatas (op. 5) in 1796 and they are both in two movements. The first movements begin with a brief Adagio before launching into fast-paced and piano dominated Allegro section. The second movement is a spirited Rondo. The second sonata begins with an expressive adagio where the cello is dominant. The Allegro section is more passionate that the first sonata and the second movement Rondo is energetic with a dance-like melody.

The third sonata was written in 1807-1808 and is in three movements and was composed at the time of the Fifth symphony. The opening movement has a pair of wonderful lyrical melodies that the cello and piano explore. This is flowed by an engaging Scherzo with a fast-paced trio. The finale movement consists of a brief Adagio before taking off with an exuberant melody. Beethoven followed the Adagio/Allegro pattern in his fourth sonata from 1815. The fourth is a lyrical sonata, shorter than the others, with the cello as the dominant instrument. The fifth sonata is also from 1815 and is in three movements. The opening movement has a dynamic melody with excellent interplay between the instruments. The Adagio is the only movement of its kind among the cello sonatas and has a somber but heart-felt melody. The Finale is played without a break and, after the introduction of the melody, flows into a fugue.

The three variations for cello and piano are early works from the 1790s and 1800s. Two of the works are based on themes from Mozart's Magic Flute with the other using Handel's See the Conquering Hero.

The music of the sonatas is inventive, reflective and witty. In these sonatas the piano and cello function pretty much as equals. There is a great deal of interplay between the instruments and depending on the sonata either instrument leads with the melody with the companion picking it up.

One could not ask for a more fabulous combination the Mstislav Rostropovich and Sviatoslav Richter performing the sonatas. The singing tone of Rostropovich is marvelous to behold and Richter is a superb partner. The sonatas were recorded in 1962-1963 when both Rostropovich and Richter were at the performing height. The variations are played by the distinguished composer Jean Francaix and cellist Maurice Gendron.

Beethoven was the first great composer of cello sonatas, and he remained really the only one until Brahms wrote two at the end of the last century, and then in our own time Martinu wrote three. Aside from a few individual works by other composers (Grieg, Rachmaninov, Shostakovich, Barber, and Britten), that about sums up the entire repertoire for this particular combination. It's a difficult medium, because the low notes of the cello tend to get covered by the bass of the piano, and balance between the two instruments is always precarious. Of course, when you have artists of the caliber of Rostropovich and Richter, there's nothing to worry about. This classic set has been the reference edition since the day it was issued, and it's now available at a budget price. --David Hurwitz
