Music reviews of Beethoven's Adagios
Music Review: A very pleasant surprise

I generally don't care for mix and match type albums, such as "Best Of" series, usually preferring to hear works in their entirety. That said, I purchased this compilation for two reasons: first, I admit that sometimes it's nice just to hear a particular TYPE of music (think adagio), and secondly, I was unfamiliar with several of the pieces on this album and wanted to hear them. I was not disappointed. This album contains gems, some of which are perhaps not widely known, but which are deserving nevertheless. In spite of being a compilation, I will go on to add that unlike some compilations, such as "The Immortal Beloved", which not only select a movement from an entire work but then goes on to edit the movement itself, this compilation presents only the full, uncut, unedited version of each piece.
A previous reviewer gave this album a two-star review based upon his/her perception of poor audio quality, including hiss. I disagree. I've listened several times to every track on both CD's with Sennheiser HD-280 headphones as well as external speakers, and the audio quality, save for one track, is in my opinion fine throughout. In some instances I can even hear instruments I've never heard before on pieces that I've listened to many times. One track alone stands out as containing a pretty good deal of hiss, the Adagio Cantabile for Cello and Piano, which is listed in the liner notes as copyright 1960...but even with that, although the hiss is a distraction, the piece is still pleasant enough to listen to. Had the entire collection been of this quality, I would think differently, but this is not the case. The other tracks are all clean as far as I can tell. Most of the tracks are copyright in the 1990's, when CD and digital technology was already firmly established, but even the few that fall outside this date range still come across quite well. Sound quality on this album should in no way be a deal breaker.
A special note on Barenboim's rendition of the Adagio from the 9th Symphony: in my humble opinion, it's one of the finest interpretations I've ever heard (so much so that having heard it, I've now ordered the entire Barenboim account of all nine Beethoven symphonies). His tempo is quite slow, which to me is refreshing after hearing so many more "modern" interpretations which seem almost to rush through the pieces a bit helter skelter (see the reviews for his nine symphony collection...some of the reviewers expound upon this further). His slow tempo gives the work a grand, epic sense. This may not appeal to everyone, but it most certainly worked for me. This is not, however, to detract from the other performances. They are all good. This is an album worth having; you won't regret owning it.
