Music reviews of Emil Gilels Edition [Box Set]Music Review: The gelid precision! Rating: 5 Stars
Since the ages of Arthur Schnabel, there were other remarkable pianists who were regarded with a special label. thinker-pianists, this valid approach made of them cult pianists for a considerable audience all over th world, they were (according their chronological birth date), Emil Gilels (19-10-1916 / 14-1|0-1985) ; Alfred Brendel (5-1-1931) and Maurizio Pollini ( 5-1-1942)).
But Emil Gilels had a advantage over the other two; he played with igneous passion from time to time, according the fact the Russian tradition held into a sort of "isolated bubble" in the first half of the XX Century for well known reasons; when Gilels made his debut in 1951 in the western hemisphere, the result was a real apotheosis, because he conjugated the best of both worlds.
These historical recordings belong the spanned years in the extinct U.R.S.S. just before his debut in the west.
His style is profoundly engaging, although he never possessed the level of lyrical imagination of Richter, his thrills and arpeggios were really exciting.
Highly recommended.
Description of Emil Gilels Edition [Box Set]This wonderful five-disc set presents Emil Gilels in previously unpublished stereo recordings from live performances. One disc is devoted to concertos by Chopin (wonderful!) and Poulenc. The others are all solo piano, including a full disc of Mozart, three Beethoven sonatas (including the mighty Hammerklavier), major works of Scriabin, Schubert, and Shostakovich, and other shorter works. Gilels was one of the major pianists of our century. He played all of this music with great integrity and plenty of color. Melodiya's editors have selected well; there isn't a dud in the series, and some of the performances are truly magnificent. Highly recommended to pianophiles! -- Leslie Gerber
