Music reviews of The Spirit Of The Renaissance

Music Review: Impressive survey of the High Renaissance
Rating: 5 Stars

As a fanatic of early music, I was overjoyed when I discovered this recording, having known Weser-Renaissance from their performances of Schutz and other earlier composers. To jump right in, the instrumental tracks are quite powerful. In contrast to many other early music discs I've heard, this one exclusively uses what 16th-century musicians would consider 'high' (loud) instruments...sounds to me like shawms, which would have been used for outdoor performances. Track after track of these can become strident at times, but true to the period.

The mix of vocal pieces is impressive...the names Dulichius and Finck are mostly to be found in modern times as authors of Lutheran hymn tunes. This disc has all the Renaissance standards...the glorious Hassler motet, the expressive Willaert madrigal, and the obligatory (though possibly spurious) Josquin masterpiece. I was particularly impressed with the Walter piece, since it includes responsive psalmody in the middle section which is rarely heard on disc. In reference to the female voices on the sacred pieces, I'm not picky about this. The all-male recordings of Josquin and Gabrieli I've heard are splendid, but the women on this recording sing accurately and true to period technique. One should listen to some of the older early music records from the 1960s for comparison...the operatic warble of those female singers makes me personally thankful for mixed choir recordings like this one, albeit slightly incorrect to sacred Renaissance practices.

My only criticism would be that the style in which the vocal pieces are performed, while perfect for the Walter and Josquin selections, sound a bit flat and and slightly dull on the more brilliant ones, such as the Hassler. When I listen to the Gabrieli Consort or Concerto Palatino perform antiphonal motets, they simply sound more glorious and jubilant than as heard on this CD. It's a small gripe, since I agree with the general style of this disc as a whole. To me, this recording represents a great summary of music in the High Renaissance, without some of the stereotypical pieces so overdone from the period. Interspersing well known masters with some less-heard yet worthy contemporaries, this is a solidly programmed and performed disc.
