Music Review: Lucifer"s Friend a rock classic

I purchased this album practically on a whim. I had come across it while placing an order for Leafhound's Grower's of Mushroom, also a classic, but that's for another review. Being a self proclaimed music officianado, I find myself diving headlong into the world of early '70s rock and there seems to be no end. Lucifer's Friend has opened me up to a whole new world of classic rock as well as a new subgenre known simply as krautrock. I find it somewhat irritating that at 27, I am just now discovering these bands. Leafhound I have known about for sometime, but there is a whole world out there of forgotten bands, bands that should have taken the world by storm had it not been for the potent images of bands like black sabbath, led zeppelin and deep purple. John Lawton, who would later replace david byron in Uriah Heep, indelibly left his mark on Lucifer's Friend as did Peter Hecht, Dieter Horns, Peter Hesslein and Joachim Rietenbach. Together they formed a classic lineup and created an excellent album. From beginning to end the album is flawless. Each song seems to have a common thread holding them together, yet they maintain a mind of their own. Ride the sky sounds like it should have made the cut of a spy flick soundtrack. Everybody's Clown, Keep Goin & Toxic Shadows, keep you hooked long enough to hit Free Baby, a suttle touch of hammond orgasm to rival that of Deep Purple's child in time or lazy. In th time of Job when Mammon was a yippie is a crazy enough ballad to prepare you for the title track. A dark ethereal tale of want and despair, fear of death and the unkown. I recomend this album to anyone who is a fan of early '70s rock and who wants to update their vinyl, but seriously, why would you do that, it sounds so much better on vinyl anyway.

Description of Lucifer's Friend

Rising from the ashes of Stonewall, British born vocalist John Lawton teamed up with the German band The German Bonds to form what would become Lucifer s Friend. Their 1973 self-titled debut is highly sought after by both Krautrock and Heavy Metal collectors for it s dark, heavy and sinister organ based hard rock, a la Uriah Heep (whom Lawton would join in 1976) and Deep Purple. An absolute must-have for early 70s hard rock enthusiasts.
