Music Review: I'd really love it....

... if any of these 15 recipes in the accompanying book is offered in restaurants of my town! The only way to taste these ancient recipes while listening to these songs performed (live if possible!), I guess, is to have my friend Giodano Bruno organize a Renaissance music workshop and hire himself as well as another friend Aceto to cook for the "Feast", while the "hired band" and singers perform these chansons, mellifluous and festive!

This is a 2-CD collection of renaissance chansons performed by Ensemble Clément Janequin, directed by Dominique Visse. The first CD "Une fête Chez Rabelais" was previously released 3 times in 1995, 1997 and 2001. The second CD is titled Les Plaisirs du Palais: Drinking Songs of the Renaissance, and it's from this CD the deluxe set takes the title.(*) The deluxe set has a hardbound book with 140 colored pages. The 2 CDs are located in 2 pockets within the front and the back covers, much like Gardiner's Bach cantata series.

As anyone who is familiar with this ensemble's recordings can expect, Ensemble Clément Janequin has never been the most polished group in terms of pure vocalism. Its strength lies in the musical interpretation, or music making if you don't like the word "interpretation". (Visse himself does not have "a golden whistle in his throat" either, but he is a superb musician nonetheless.) The choice of songs reflects wide varieties of the Renaissance chanson genre: from the noisy songs of festivity to heart-wrenching courtly songs of unrequited love. There are not only Franco-Flemish imitative style compositions from Gombert etc., but also treble-dominated Parisian chansons by Sermisy etc.. A feast of chansons, that is.

All the song texts are given in the (original) French with English and German translations. The recipes themselves are taken from ancient texts, mostly from late 13th century to the 16th century. For most, but not all, recipes English translations are given, although the (archaic) French wouldn't be a problem to either Bruno or Aceto!

And if the workshop never materializes, I am inviting any one who promises to make these 15 dishes for me, to be my guest in "Mount Messiaen" for 15 days. One day a dish!

Needless to say, I recommend this set.(**)

(*) The titles can be translated as "A feast in the time of Rabelais" and "The fun/pleasure palace" respectively.
