Music reviews of Strange Weirdos: Music From & Inspired By the Film 'Knocked Up'

Music Review: This album is `pregnant with emotion'...
Rating: 4 Stars

If you've read my recently posted review of `Knocked Up' you'll know that I cried (yes, CRIED) at the end of the film when the song `Daughter' started to play. Yes, I know that being a father of a two-year-old little girl totally swayed me in that tearful direction, but the song is so beautifully written. So, as the film ended I had to look it up and that's when I found this album, `Strange Weirdos: Music From and Inspired by the Film Knocked Up'. I am new to the musician known as Loudon Wainwright III, but as a longstanding fan of Ray LaMontagne I was instantly brought into this album and really relish in it.

If you are a fan of the whole folk rock scene then you will devour this!

There is quite a bit to love here, even if there are some tracks that don't beckon me to listen over and over. It's an album that I almost wish I had listened to a few times before writing my review for the film, because it adds a few layers that almost make me want to give the film that extra star I debating on. There is this warm sincerity that runs through this album that makes me adore the film for all the gushy sentimentality it flirts with.

And that `Daughter' song!

So, the album opens very strong with `Grey In L.A.', a nice upbeat track that humorously attacks the cities most recognizable attraction; sunshine. The sweetly moving `You Can't Fail Me Now' takes the album in another direction, yet it doesn't feel out of place. It's an effortless swoop into more delicate territory. `Daughter' is still my favorite track here, and may be one of my favorite songs. Yes, sentimental for sure, but so sweet and spunky and charming and just all around perfect. It captures the very uplifting feeling that comes from being a father. `Valley Morning' is a tender song that has layers of humor that make it something special. It's delivered in such a marvelously commanding way; I just love it.

`Feel So Good' is such an upbeat charmer that I can't help but totally adore it. `So Much to Do' has that spunk too, but not as much in my humble opinion. Speaking of spunk, the closing track `Passion Play' really embodies the films core and delivers one of the most delightful tracks on the album.

`Final Frontier' has a dark edge that calls to mind a dusty western. It is a track that I merely liked at first, but after about the third listen or so I really, really liked it. `Lullaby' is sweet but it is formulaic and forgettable due to the lack of any real `wow' factor. It's a serviceable track that is easy on the ears. The same can be said for `Strange Weirdos', the albums title track, but there is something about this particular song (maybe it's the lyrical content) that makes me really enjoy it.

The only two songs I don't really get are `X or Y' and `Doin' the Math'. I get the spunky `fun' quality of `X or Y', but I just don't like the song. `Doin' the Math' is just boring to me.

The album has two instrumentals, both of which are really nicely done; `Naomi' being the better of the two. That said, both are beautiful and add a nice touch to the already pretty solid album.

It may seem like a strange companion piece (folk rock and Judd Apatow don't seem like compatible bedmates) but this album works beautifully when paired with the film. Like I mentioned, it adds layers to the film and makes me appreciate it more. I'd totally recommend BOTH the film and the soundtrack, for the compliment one another wonderfully.

Now I'm off to listen to `Daughters' again and look up more Loudon Wainwright III albums!

Rather than an ordinary film soundtrack, this might more accurately be considered an exceptional Loudon Wainwright album. A diehard Wainwright fan, director Judd Apatow explains in his liner notes that he asked the singer-songwriter to score Knocked Up, Apatow's first film since The 40-Year-Old Virgin, only to learn that Wainwright was about to embark on his next recording project with producer Joe Henry. The resulting album features material that Wainwright had written before the film score that the director wanted to use, other cuts that are instrumental snippets in the movie but are songs with lyrics on the album, and still others that take thematic inspiration from the film. While Wainwright so often writes lacerating and hilariously personal material, many of these songs are more like character studies, with a musical range that extends from the ragtime "So Much to Do" (one of two songs written with Henry) and the call-and-response of the chromosome ditty "X or Y" to the Brecht/Weill cabaret tinge of "Final Frontier" to the bluesy "Doin' the Math." Among the musicians providing stellar support are guitarists Richard Thompson and Greg Leisz and keyboardists Patrick Warren and Van Dyke Parks. --Don McLeese
