Music Review: Lou At His Best

This cd is a remake of his classic album Soulin'. It includes the tune that put him on the mainstream map, "Love Is A hurtin' Thing". It's a great song and was the reason I first purchased this album around 1966. But as good as the hit record is I immediately fell in love with the "B" side. First there is the classic Lou Rawls monologue "Memory Lane" in which he sets up his version of the Sinatra tune "It Was A Very Good Year". Then he smoothly transitions into "Old Folks". After that he starts to play with a few classics and sings them in that soulful Lou Rawls style, "Autumn Leaves", "Breaking My Back (Instead of Using My Mind)". This album singlehandily taught me how to by albums for the rest of my life. You by the album because you love the artist and his style not just because of a hit record. If your are just getting into Lou Rawls this is Numero Uno on your list, and if you've been into Lou well.....I don't have to tell you.
