Music reviews of Start SomethingMusic Review: This with be THE breakout release of 2004 Rating: 5 Stars
I have been a tremendous fan of this act since late '99 when they were breaking out in the UK. I had their debut album "The Fake Sound of Progress" imported when it was first released in 2000, and fell completely in love with it. A few years later they are releasing "Start Something", and start something it will, because this album has blown even me, one of their most avid fans, completely away. The first thing that is devastatingly obvious here is how much this band has matured. While the last album was tremendous it definitely had an "indie" feel, and while the band definitely was quiet experimental, it was never overly complex. Yes, they were doing some pretty complicated stuff with their instruments, but the song structuring and layers of sound weren't really developed. On "Start Something" this is no longer true, and the best way that I can think of describing their newly developed sound is "BIGGER". Think arena-type modern rock that is completely taken over by energetic punk influences. Vocally this is quite a transition for the band as well. TFSOP had quite a hardcore undertone with a huge amount of screaming. Here, with a few exceptions, the screaming has definitely taken a huge departure and if it does happen to pop up it's typically in the backing vocals. Ian has also changed the tune of his singing as well, as it is considerably less high pitched this time around and sounds considerably better. 1.) "We Still Kill The Old Way" - This song opens heavy to get the album going and transitions into a fast anthem-like track obviously pointed at their live sound and attempting to get things moving from the get-go. It has some great moments (such as the quieter bridge building to the end, and a strong chorus), but isn't quite as strong as a lot of the other tracks. 2.) "To Hell We Ride" - One of the tracks that still has a focus on screaming. This took me a few listens to get into as much as the rest of the album. Loud and energetic and will be an amazing live track for sure. Overall I feel that the start of the album is its weakest point (particularly this track), and its all uphill from this point. 3.) "Last Train Home" - The first single in the U.S. which really is the first introduction to what most of the rest of the album sounds like. This was a great track to release as the first single because it encompasses a lot of what the band is capable of. It has slower more poignant moments, a faster bridge, a soaring chorus, and is just an overall great track. 4.) "Make a Move" - The spacey-orient intro to this song showcases a one of the lps best aspects and it sounds tremendous. They still have a lot of the experimentation they used to, and it is working perfectly for them here. This is a very catchy track though it doesn't have a whole lot of variation in it. It is definitely elevated immensely by its sound effects. 5.) "Burn Burn" - This was the first single in the UK, and sounds absolutely nothing like anything else on here. That doesn't mean it's not any good though because this track is just a ton of fun. It's the ultimate party song that bounces, screams, and gets you dancing whether you like it or not. 6.) "I Don't Know" - This was the song where I new that I absolutely loved this album. The intro and verse are soft and nothing overly exciting, but the chorus is absolutely amazing. The only thing holding this song back is that some parts of it are so amazingly hooky and catchy, while the verses are so somber. Definitely one of my favorites on the album. 7.) "Hello Again" - I love the guitar intro/backing and the echo effect on the vocals in the verses. It all runs perfectly into a giant soaring chorus. There isn't anything devastatingly unique from the rest of the album here, but that doesn't mean it doesn't do everything really well. Great song with tremendous vocals and an amazing climatic conclusion. 8.) "Goodbye Tonight" - This is a lot in the vein of the previous track in that it is extremely well done and very catchy. Beautiful singing towards the beginning with a pulsating guitar bridge and one of the catchiest hooks on the album. This is a definite potential single. Let me also say that it's really nice to hear some optimism in the rock community! 9.) "Start Something" - Here is where the band starts paying tribute to their past and their fans of their heavier sound. Fast singing backed with a constant screaming burst that definitely sounds like a much more mature version of some of their older songs. It's ironic that the title song of this new album reminds me the most of their earlier work. 10.) "A Million Miles" - This song for me is sort of the union of the different sounds present on each of the two albums. There are so many parts of this song that remind me of clips of songs off the last album. The string arrangement is a particularly fun touch as well. 11.) "Last Summer" - This track is soft, absurdly catchy, and definitely the most pop-driven song on here. It's safe to say that if this song was released as a single there'd be no stopping it, though it would paint a very mellow teenybopper portrait of the band. Probably my favorite track. 12.) "Sway" - Definitely the most experimental and beautiful song on the album. The vocals are gorgeous, and the sound effects are spacey and almost in a techno-vein. This is a very ambient flowing soft track with a very appropriate title. It serves as an absolutely perfect ending to an incredible album. BUY THIS. You wont regret it.
