Music Review: She's back, and how!

Loretta Lynn is like the method actor of country singers - she has lived, loved, and lost every word and every emotion of her songs. If we fans regret her lengthy absence from the music scene while taking care of her beloved husband, this album was our welcome back treat.
The songs are personal and classic Loretta - "Country in My Genes" might seem silly on first listen but you'll catch what Loretta is trying to say. "Table for Two" is a beautiful, melancholy ballad and Loretta's voice on this recording is better than ever. However, there is one song that stands out as a masterpiece and it is "I Can't Hear the Music." I can't listen to this song without crying, and Loretta herself gets choked up right before the second chorus. It is a mournful realization of life without Doolittle, and you feel every ounce of Loretta's pain. And her soaring vocals are terrific.
I think it was very important to title this CD "Still Country," given the soulless, pop crossover sound that has sadly dominated Nashville since the advent of Shania Twain. Well, Ms. Lynn has bravely and wisely bucked that trend, and has delivered a wonderful album that is heartfelt, high-quality, and of course, "still country."
Description of Still Country
In a life that took her from Butcher Holler to stardom to legend, Loretta Lynn has endured her share of tragedies. The 1996 death of husband Mooney--her right hand from the start of Lynn's career--required an excruciating adjustment that tested her grit and resiliency. Her first album of new songs in 12 years reveals how well those traits sustained her. Producer Randy Scruggs plays to her strengths, emphasizing Lynn's voice, which is nearly as strong now as it was decades ago. The snappy, direct wit that made "Fist City" and "The Pill" special now flavors "Table for Two" and "Country in My Genes," an unsubtle dig at current Nashville trendiness. There's a consistent quality that runs through the entire album, but the showcase is "I Can't Hear the Music," a heartfelt, direct tribute to Mooney. It's impossible to not be moved as Loretta bares her love, loss, and pain to the world. It may not be radio-friendly, but the song is as real as it gets. --Rich KienzleGeneral CDs
