Music Reviews of Long Road Out of Eden

Music Review: Great CD, but not enough quality material for Joe
Rating: 4 Stars

Just saw an amazing Eagles concert, and felt I had to go out and get this CD. I've been reading the reviews, and can understand how some people would pan it. If you're looking for the Eagles to act like they are the same people they were 30 years ago, and to make you feel like they made you feel 30 years ago, you're probably going to be disappointed.

Instead, I think this is a gutsy move by an incredibly talented band to be upfront and honest about where they are in life now, what they care about now and the lessons they've learned. I can't imagine them writing some of these same lyrics 30 years ago... In Waiting In the Weeds "A small gray spider spinning in the dark, in spite of all the times the web has been torn apart" (which of us hasn't felt that way about things we gave our all to, but felt we came up short?), or in Do Something "It's too easy not to care and you're not ready for the rocking chair" (which of us hasn't gotten more apathetic as we've gotten older?). For some of the songs, I wondered whether they were written for/about their children but disguised as something else... in Fast Company "Turn to me and help me try to remember that raging fire that the years put out" (for those who have had to deal with a rebellious teenager that can't seem to get their act together).

I found the CD brave, honest, touching and inspirational. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough quality material for Joe Walsh. At a minimum, they could have added One Day at a Time to the CD (from the Farewell I tour). It would have fit nicely with the rest of the material.

Music Review: After Almost 30 Years of Traveling In the Long Road Out of Eden, Eagles Arrive With Great Songs
Rating: 5 Stars

What other band than the Eagles would make a lot of people to drive out of their ways to a Wal Mart store just to pick a CD which is being exclusively sold there, making it goes all the way to the Billboard's No. 1 in the first week of sales? Honestly, I can't imagine one.

It seems that no other retailer, like Amazon for instance, will be able to sell this album anytime soon, except for those sellers who advertise the product (either used or for reselling) in the Marketplace here. Fortunately, if you can't go to a Wal Mart store, there are also the options of purchasing the CD or the digital download directly from Wal Mart or the Eagles website (in the band's page, there is a Hi-Fi download option available for those MP3 haters). Despite all that, I still prefer [...] to post my reviews and, apparently, a lot of other people feel the same way...

All songs are pretty much the Eagles way. One or another track has a more modern arrangement. After all those years, their voices sound almost the same thing as in the 70s. Twenty songs at once were made to compensate all these years without great new tunes (although 1994's Hell Freezes Over and 2003's The Very Best Of compilation had new songs - Get Over It, Learn to Be Still, Love Will Keep Us Alive, The Girl from Yesterday and Hole in the World).

My picks for this new album are: "Long Road Out of Eden", "I Don't Want to Hear Any More", "No More Cloudy Days" and "Center of The Universe", all beautiful songs. "It's Your World Now" has an interesting Mexican appeal. Hear it and judge for yourself.

Music Review: Was "The Long Road" worth the long wait?
Rating: 3 Stars

Sort of.

First off, let me say that I am a HUGE Eagles fan. I have all of their CDs, DVDs, and I can play most of their songs on guitar. I loves me some Eagles.

This album has been on and off production since 2001 and I have been waiting eagerly for it since then. I must say that I was a bit disappointed on my first listen.

My first criticism is the overall slow pace of the album. Most of the songs are ballads. The Eagles are known for writing amazing ballads ("Desperado" and "Lyin' Eyes" to name 2 of my favorites), but the ones on "The Long Road" seem to all sound more or less the same. None of the compositions really stand out and are more or less forgettable. The only exception is the Frey-penned "No More Cloudy Days" - AMAZING song.

Second, the Eagles have been known to "rock out" with songs like "Life In the Fast Lane" and "Take It Easy", but the new album only has 2 or 3 "rockin'" songs ("How Long" and "Somebody"). Again, these songs are good, but they just don't seem to have the same classic feel as the band's 70s output.

Thirdly, some of the songs have programmed drum tacks rather than an actual drummer. In my opinion, that's cheating; especially from a band as talented and capable as The Eagles (Don Henley should be ashamed - he's an excellent drummer).

I must admit, though, that after 2 or 3 listenings to the album, it is starting to grow on me. I DO like the album, I just don't feel that it's as good as their classics from the 70s. Regardless, I'll keep listening and continue to be a fan.

Music Review: Thank You Very Much Eagles
Rating: 5 Stars

When I decided to write a review, I had a hard time deciding which title will be more fitting. Several came to mind: The Long Wait, A Must Buy, Still Relevant, etc. however, after hearing these superb two discs a couple of times, it became clear to me it had to reflect my thankfulness for music this good still being made.

This CD has several merits:

Most of the material sounds fresh, it doesn't feel as if the Eagle sound just time warped forward 28 years, the arrangements suggest that the input of the various session musicians and the musical baggage of its members actually helped update the Eagles sound;

Every Eagle (as usual) sings at least a couple of songs with its own distinctive style, which makes the CD diversity interesting;

I like almost every song and these days even in a 10 song CD that is a difficult feat (highlights are Business as Usual, What I Do With My Heart, Somebody, Long Road Out of Eden, Frail Grasp of the Big Picture, Fast Company, I Dont Want To Hear Anymore).

I am an early forties guy still hooked to the musical glory years of the 70 and 80s and its pleasant that you can still find acts like Eagles, Toto (Falling In Between), Depeche Mode (Playing the Angel) or Santana (Supernatural) whose recent/last releases still feature great and relevant music.

Based on the excellent commercial response to this CD, I just hope The Eagles find the time/energy to tour so the excellent material from Long Road Out of Eden gets the DVD treatment it deserves.

Music Review: 'bout Time
Rating: 5 Stars

Since the Long Run release, 25+ years ago, we've been given a linty of crap about this band from the media and from rumor. I'm happy to hear these fellas haven't lost anything. If anything they gained much from life's experiences and growth and put it into their music. The solo careers are a heavy influence on this effort, especially Henley.
A lot of people won't get the messages in this music, because they are looking for the simple pleasures that we enjoyed in younger years. This music talks about today, and reflects on what was better about yesterday. The song list here is not the best they've done, yet they have shown all of us what comes with age is professional musicianship, excellent song writing and impeccable production. Don't forget, these guys are masters at keeping pop music simple and refined. And the funny thing is that none of this music is pop, its just Eagles at their best. Also, I understand why Felder was not a part of this, as he would not have fit well with much on this effort. Joe Walsh, by the way, has grown immensely, and it shows. There's a seriousness to his work here that doesn't let you just "walk away".
Compared to the garbage that's been out there, and I mean pretty much all of it, for the last 15 years or so, I believe this the best effort from anyone since the early '90's rock scene. The diluted music industry doesn't allow this kind of music to be a major player like it once embraced, so enjoy this serving from one the best American rock bands of our generation.
