Music Review: Great Performance

Loggins and Messina was always a wimpy, soft rock band (House At Pooh Corners) that occasionally ventured into a slightly harder sound (Angry Eyes). Loggins and Messina are moderately good song writers and the band had some good musicians. The original line up always put on a fantastic show.

The first half of the first CD is mainly solo Kenny Loggins accompanying himself on accoustic guitar. Jim Messina joins in after the fourth song for three more acoustic songs. After that, the rest of the band joins in and everything gets electric. The band plays with a lot of energy and there are numerous leads taken on sax, violin and guitar.

Angry at 10 minutes is very good with a number of nice solos. It is played harder than the studio version. The real showcase is Vahevala, which is stretched out to 20 minutes. There are great violin and guitar solos and a nice little spacy interlude near the end.

Before the News is a cute but short violin piece with an apt title. In the old days of FM radio, rock stations were a lot freer in what they played. They didn't have standard play lists or structured formats. Scheduling of songs was fairly loose. One song might end just a minute or two before the news would start. The radio station needed to fill the time, but couldn't use a standard 3 minute song. So they would fill in with a short instrumental that the could cut off at any point once the news came on.

As a historical note, Loggins and Messina was indirectly responsible for tightened sercurity at Tucson concerts. Loggins and Messina and Jefferson Airplane were playing the same night. The normal concert reviewer went to the Loggins and Messina show. The newspaper sent a regular reporter to the Jefferson Airplane concert. The reporter was shocked at all of the smoking going on. Instead of writing about the concert, he wrote about the drug use, starting a furor in the town.
