Music reviews of The Road To Here

Music Review: Sweet, Sweet Harmonizing Music
Rating: 5 Stars

As I sit and listen to the lush four-part harmonies that I have come to learn are the hallmark of Little Big Town, I have to wonder how this group escaped my notice until this year! XM Satellite Radio installed my 2008 Cadillac CTS has been very good at showcasing music I have never heard on my local commercial radio station with their propensity for playing the same (commercially viable) artists over and over again. In the process excellent groups like Little Big Town do not get adequate air play.

Not so with XM Satellite Radio; it's on XM Satellite Radio that I first heard the single Evangeline from Little Big Town's 2007 CD A Place to Land. I liked the track so much that I decided to check the group out and reserved both The Road To Here (the subject of this review) and A Place To Land (future review) at the local library; I'm so glad I did! This is gorgeous music!

Little Big Town, founded in 1998 in where else, Nashville, is composed of Karen Fairchild (lead & background vocals), Kimberly Schlapman (lead & background vocals), Jimi Westbrook (lead & background vocals, rhythm guitar), and Phillip Sweet (lead & background vocals, rhythm guitar). The quartet's musical style relies heavily on opulent four-part vocal harmonies, with all four members alternating as lead singers.

Where to begin to review this album? It's rare that I enjoy every song on a given album, but such is the case with Little Big Town's The Road To Here. The lyrics are strong and well written, mostly by group members, the instrumentation is vintage American C&W, and the vocals are comprised of strong leads accompanied by big, lush four-part harmonies that would do Boys-II-Men proud. Little Big Town is everything a group like Lady Antebellum is not! After listening to both groups it's hard for me to square all of the accolades thrown at Lady A's (as Lady Antebellum is popularly known) collective feet, while this suburb groups that epitomizes the American country sound continues to labor without proper industry recognition; i.e. a Grammy, American Music Award, or ACM award.

Because the group changes lead signers from track to track, the music is fluid and ever changing; i.e. you never know what might be coming next, and that's half the fun of listening to The Road To Here. One constant however, is the sumptuous four-part harmonies that you can sit back and sink your ears into and swear you were in musical heaven.

There is not one C&W group on the American landscape--that I know if anyway--that can touch Little Big Town's musical acumen, they are unique to the C&W music world. The combination of two men and two women is the perfect (unique) combination, and produces such perfect harmonies, blend so effortlessly, that one would swear they have been together since diapers, but in fact they have only been together for twelve years. The alternating lead vocal duties are also unique, as is the fact that all four members' vocal acuity is equal to the others in the group.

The Road To Here is an aural treat, a musical feast for the ears and the soul. From the first track to the last, there is not one misstep, one false note; there is everything to love and nothing to dislike on this CD. If you are fan of seriously good C&W music do yourself a huge favor and check out the Road To Here from Little Big Town!

Description of The Road To Here

It's the harmonies that draw you in. The big, lush, gorgeous harmonies. You're hooked and it's then that you realize that it's not just the harmonies. Everything about Little Big Town is unique to the country music world. Comprised of Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Roads, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet, Little Big Town's configuration of two men and two women is unique. Also unique is that there is no single lead vocalist all four take on lead vocal responsibilities. Little Big Town's voices blend so effortlessly one would think they'd been singing together since childhood. While that isn't quite true, their backgrounds are strikingly similar. All four band members began singing in church and with their families and Phillip even performed in a family band. Each then blossomed in their craft during college, a career as a professional musician the clear path for each. Equity. 2005.
