Music reviews of Meteora [Special Edition w/ Bonus DVD]

Music Review: The Sophmore Jinx? Not a Problem For Linkin Park
Rating: 5 Stars

Linkin Park busts out of their 18 month creation period with a Phenomenal Sophomore Album. 13 Tracks of pure energy with no gaps. Each song literally has no seconds of space in between them which makes it that much better, getting you right into the next song, from the previous. The Enhanced CD also comes with a bonus DVD with the making of the Album, which gives you an awesome view of how this album was put together and how much dedication and work Linkin Park puts into their music. Guitar Tracking, Drum Tracking, Vocal Recording, everything is all on there. And also shows that the band has a little kid inside of them at times too. Here is the break down of the Album:

Foreword - a 13 second track with more history than you would think. Mike had a CD burner that would always glitch and mess up the CDs he would make during recording. So he just recorded himself, beating this CD burner with a metal bat, which is what you hear on the CD. It may sound stupid but it flows nicely into the next track making for a nice intro to....

Don't Stay - A Very nice, heavy track. All you heavy Rawkers would love this one, with Chester taking over with his exploding voice. Full of energy from beginning to End.

Somewhere I Belong - The first single off the new album. The intro is actually not what you think! Chester had a chord progression on an Acoustic Guitar that Mike really liked but thought it sounded too "folky." so mike cut it up into pieces as 1-2-3-4 using a computer program named Pro Tools. Then ran it backwards, recorded it and then played it 4-3-2-1, recorded it again and then put it back as 1-2-3-4. So that's how you hear the swaying, sweeping sound as the intro. The chorus was written almost 40 times because Mike and Chester couldn't get it exactly right. Very Nice song, one of the most optimistic ones i must say.

Lying From You - Amazing song. I love it. Chester sings so hard in this song and will make for a very difficult, almost impossible cover song. The Riffs are great and clean. Very good for getting pumped up.

Hit the Floor - Almost like Hybrid Theory's "By Myself" Chester peaks the screaming and almost makes this song one of the Darkest on the Album. Excellent

Easier To Run - One of the softer songs on the Album. Chester shows his harmony in this song, collaborating with Mike. Rob also has some very complex drum patters on this song, adding to the Greatness.

Faint - The Second single, but if you want to hear the real song, buy the CD. The Radio version (in some areas) has been edited to leave out the best part, The Bridge. The Band really comes through in this one, using live strings and a Combination of Screaming and rapping to bring a great song to life.

Figure.09 - Excellent Song also. Joe (the DJ) starts the song with gentle Taps on his turntable and distortion pedal to create sort of a "Drum" effect. Another incorporation of Rapping and nice strong vocals. Add another song to the Vault!

Breaking The Habit - One that stands out from the album yet strangely fits in at the same time. Mike had wanted to write this song for about 6 years but could never get the vocals to be right, saying they'd be too cheesy or not good enough. Finally, he sat down one night and all of the lyrics came to him in 3 hours which he thought was very touching for him. The song is Phenomenal and really shows Chester's Wide range of Vocals.

From the Inside - I LOVE this song. It's very energetic and true to its lyrics. The beginning starts with scratching and then comes in with heavy Guitars. Mike and Chester collaborate excellently and Chester ends it with his strong voice. This song was actually written on 6/8 time. A different Path for LP to take. But thats what they do best.

Nobody's Listening - The Hip hop track of the Album, Mike takes over and adds his style to the song. The band at one point thought that this song felt "Separated" from the rest of Meteora so Brad added a muted guitar part and Chester added his vocals to bring the track back into a Part of the album.

Session - The Famous instrumental track of Linkin Park albums, the whole band put their touches on this track to make it sound like it flows with the Album also. This track will also be features on the "Matrix: Reloaded" Soundtrack

Numb - The Title says it all. Which is what is leaves you, Numb. This track is simply AMAZING. Chester pushes his voice to its limit in the Bridge and his voice and the lyrics give me chills. It leaves you with the feeling that "this is the end of the album" and it sums up everything in one song, seeming like the band wants to blow you away with the last song and that is just what they do.

So In The End (no pun intended) this album will blow you away. With the songs short and sweet, it won't leave you with songs that you'll change halfway through. This band is the MOST dedicated Band I have ever seen and the best to their fans. Teens will appreciate the way that they can relate to the lyrics and everyone can see how much the band has improved and matured since Hybrid Theory. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

Description of Meteora [Special Edition w/ Bonus DVD]

Bonus DVD contains 35 minutes of footage documenting the making of Meteora.
Linkin Park?s second studio effort (not counting the 2002 remix album Reanimation) overflows with glossy production values and Big Rock oomph, fully embracing the pop instincts of their Hybrid Theory debut. For many, Theory sounded inexcusably corporate, from its too-timely rap-rock sound to the long list of product endorsements included in the liner notes. Meteora will only amplify those complaints, but this album is actually truer to the band?s nature. It?s still impossible not to hear strains of Limp Bizkit , Korn , Rage Against the Machine , and the like. None of those acts, however, would try something as blatantly anthemic as "Easier to Run," which would sound fine to a Def Leppard fan, or as borderline danceable as "Breaking the Habit" and "Session." Linkin Park is what Trent Reznor was always afraid of becoming, but if you ever wished he would drop the pretenses and just make a hair-metal record, you'll find Meteora to your liking. --Matthew Cooke
