Music reviews of Speak

Music Review: Exceeds expectations
Rating: 4 Stars

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I just...didn't think it would be very good. All I'd ever heard of Lindsay's music were her Disney hits, "Ultimate" and "Drama Queen (That Girl)." They were fun, but nothing spectacular. Then I heard "Rumors," which, ironically, was released quite a while before this album. I thought it was a great song at first, but it gets old after a while. Then....I saw the video, which I was not pleased with at all. If she's being a skank this early in her career, expect her to be a straight-up sex-crazed chain-smoking streetwalker by the next album. People were complaining about the picture on the cover, which I find very bizarre, because the cover is fine-I was actually terrified by the likely possibility that she would put a really slutty picture on the cover. There are some pictures in the booklet, however, that many parents would find questionable. Anyways, her image aside, this is a pretty good album.

FIRST- This might be my favorite on the album-I think it should be the next single, but it probably won't be. It is incredibly catchy, especially the chorus-and I love the verses, too. It is very well-produced. The best-possibly second-best-song here. (5/5)

NOBODY 'TIL YOU- I like this one a lot, as well. But at this point, I begin to realize....Linday's style is pretty much identical to Ashlee Simpson's. Anyways, this song is very catchy and well-produced. Another one you can dance to. The lyrics might be a little better than "First." This is single-worthy. (5/5)

SYMPTOMS OF YOU- This is possibly the only slower song on the album....and it doesn't stay slow for long. It's a power-ballad. The chorus is fairly catchy, but this isn't quite as good as the first two. It's alright, but I don't love it. (3/5)

SPEAK- This is another one of the album's highlights. Very catchy, and it even has a good message. I could see this being a hit at the clubs. I don't know if it's quite as good as the first two, but it's still very good. It has almost a haunting, enchanting, eerie sound to it. (5/5)

OVER- This is supposedly going to be the next single, and I think that is a mistake. The beginning is a total rip-off of Hilary Duff's "Fly." And yet it's still not as good. I don't like this one that much. The ending of the chorus is kind of cool, but it can't match up to the first few. It sounds like a watered-down "Fly" with different lyrics. (3/5)

SOMETHING I NEVER HAD- I don't like this one that much, either. Another Ashlee-esque power-ballad. The message is kind of interesting. The backing track is nice-she really got her hands on some good producers-but the song itself isn't that catchy. (3/5)

ANYTHING BUT ME- This is yet another very catchy, well-produced track. It sounds a little too similar to "Speak." The rock-out songs kind of start blending together at this point. Her voice is kind of annoying in the chorus, but this is still a rather good song. Maybe not *quite* as good as the other 5s here, but I still like it. Not bad at all. (5/5)

DISCONNECTED- I don't like this one that much. It sounds just like the other seven rock-out songs here. It doesn't really stand out. The beat seems generic. (3/5)

TO KNOW YOUR NAME- This one stands out because its sound is so different from the rest of the album. It interestingly combines techno and hip-hop. The chorus is sort of catchy, but dreary-and the melody sounds like it's been done. (3/5)

VERY LAST MOMENT IN TIME- This is the closest the album comes to an actual ballad, but it's still rock-influenced and overproduced. Sort of catchy and sweet, and the lyrics actually are quite meaningful. But. It doesn't break away from the other power-ballad numbers here. (3/5)

RUMORS- This is the second of two whiny rants on the album over the drawbacks of stardom. A club-banging anger romp, this is definitely one of the top three most catchy songs here-possibly the best period. But unlike the other ones here I really like, this one gets a tad repetitive after a while. The song ends abruptly, which feels awkward. But, this is still a very impressive rock song with an infectious chorus and danceable beats. Though I didn't like the video, she *did* prove in it that she is actually a pretty good dancer. (5/5)

OVERALL SCORE: 43/55

All in all, you gotta give Lindsay props-unlike Hilary, she scored a hit on mainstream radio with "Rumors," and this album is anything but the frothy bubblegum pop we hear from Hilary. In fact, I think this album might be pure club-banging rock 'n' roll-I'm surprised it wasn't more pop-influenced. Pretty much all of the songs on here are upbeat, because Lindsay doesn't have the voice for ballads-but I do think she has a better voice than Hilary Duff, who I personally think is void of any vocal talent at all. Also, Lindsay sings totally live. Even more impressive, she co-wrote five of the songs here, including the smash "Rumors." Hilary has co-written what-one or two songs throughout her entire career? And I'm sure many are wondering: is her music better than Hilary's? Well, yes and no. That is a lot like comparing Jessica and Ashlee. Some of Hilary's stuff may be a tad more catchy, but her music is also a lot more annoying, and you feel way more guilty for enjoying it. Lindsay Lohan, like Ashlee Simpson, has a somewhat raspy voice that is built for rocking, but unlike Hilary's, it doesn't become cloying after a few listens. Hilary's honeyed and sugary, if not flimsy, vocals are very different from Lindsay's powerful shouts. If you like bubblegum pop, 'Speak' will leave you cold. But incredibly catchy rock-out romps are here in abundance, making this overall a worthwhile buy-at least far more so than Hilary's horrible self-titled sophomore attempt.

Description of Speak

LOHAN LINDSAY SPEAK
Lindsay Lohan leaps into her much anticipated debut CD with a blast of something that simulates warmed-over Led Zeppelin (the lyrically ferocious "First") and from there finesses it into a stylish experiment in pounding away at teen pop's predictability. Influences--not all of whom her 8-to-14-year-old fans will flip to, or even find, in their pinup mags--loom large: While the Ashlee Simpson-like rocker "Nobody 'Til You" winds into the Jessica Simpson-y "Symptoms of You," the lovelorn "Something I Never Had," taps a sweetly unself-conscious vocal vein that owes gratitude to the otherwise highly un-Lohan-like Lisa Loeb. Though Lohan might balk at the comparison--she is, after all, the "Ultimate"-spawning original teenage drama queen--fellow tween queen Hilary Duff's stamp is pressed firmly into stormy self-explorers like "Disconnected" and "Anything But Me." Where "Speak" intones loudest, though, is in its least-rocking, most beat-propelled songs: The title track dips and bounces tantalizingly, begging hands-in-the-air listeners to "c'mon and let it out"; "To Know Your Name" digitizes a sexy hip-hop inflected dance number; and "Rumors," a J. Lo-like thumper (and one in a trifecta of pouts over the pitfalls of stardom) ends this disc on a don't-stop, bound-for-diva-dom note. -Tammy La Gorce
